Before we go any further...

YES. I searched this forum for "recommend ampsim". And guess what came back?

NOTHING.

I read the stickied list of ampsims thread.

Whats the recommended one for you guys using them at home for practicing purposes? Playing along with mp3s, etc... Not even necessarily for use in a DAW. Something that has a good standalone mode. If it matters I play stuff in the tone range of Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, etc... Not uber high gain.

I will be interfacing with a MBox2 if possible.

Thanks in advance for your suggestions! :worship:

Depends on what you are after...I mainly uses Overloud Triode 1 with the modern amp (Rectifer-sim) because of its great standalon mode.

Additionally I can highly recomment LePous456 (Engl Powerball sim) but it's "merely" a VST...

Freeware: LePou has a Soldano, Powerball, "HyBrit" ampsim.. AcmeBarGig has mostly original amp(sims) not based on any particular real gear.. I have made the Engl E530 ampsim TSE X30, Robert Passion has made the Revolution ampsim based on a Mesa i guess.. NickCrow Wagner Sharp 1 & 2.. 7170/8505.. And you have Warp, Aradaz, Dirthead etc.. These are the freeware that I think are the most used ones atleast.. hehe.. I basically repeated half of the ampsim list-thread :p

For Iron Maiden type sound I would recommend LePou's HyBrit..

Revalver has been out for a while hasnt it?

Anything to avoid with the older versions? If I can get them cheaper are they still good?

Or do I really need the current version?

and is revalver useable for loading cab/power amp impulses if I want to do some recording with it?

Or am I really better off with the freebee amp sims that I am reading about in the impulse threads?

I had Revalver MkII but the update price for MkIII (200,- $) is far too high, at least for me.

Ther advantage is that even MkII can load the integrated effects, speaker impulses (even externally) and every VST you can dream of.

So I use either Overloud TH1 Triode or Revalver MkII with Overloud or Le456 and impulses from Recabinet. A great combination! :kickass:

I understand the 1st part. You like both Overloud Triode TH1 and Revalver MKII.

What do you mean "with" Overloud or Le456?

Aren't those just 2 more ampsims?

You dont stack ampsims do you?

Well, as I said Revalver MkII can also load VSTs such as other amspims (Le456 or whatever). I think that especially Le456 is a more than great (and free!) ampsim and it's better than the ones from Revalver itself.

So I combine both and substitute the ampmodule from revalver with another ampsim (VST), see?

MKIII sounds much better and was when Peavey took over the Revalver name. The Peavey sims in it are excellent.

Ahh I see. You use revalver for the standalone aspect, but load other "non-standalone" ones into it that you like better?

Yep, right.

One personal comment to MkIII - I agree it beats MkII but not that far that 200 bucks as an upgrade price will be adequate. I like the 6505 but e.g. the XXX sucks to my mind...

Overloud TH1 Triode has the best recto sim so far and costs only about 69,- € so I switched to that. In addition to that Peavey made the evaluation of Revalver nearly impossible (see the peavey forum where long year customers are VERY angry that there isn't a progress and not even bug fixing going on).

Bottom line: all a matter of taste, as always :)
