So my band is recording a few songs now, im producing them ect... Theres this snare part in a song so we thought itd be cool to get a marching snare from our school to do it. I mic'ed it up with a 57, like a normal snare. and a condenser about 5 feet away. It sounds pretty decent actually. Im just looking for some tips for beefing it up and adding some ambience to it.

I would probably mic from fairly far away in a good, big room. Lots of natural ambience. Record several takes to simulate an ensemble.

What might be really cool is if you started off with 100% "room" mic and 0% "close" mic, or maybe a big impulse reverb to simulate the room. And automate the reverb sound to become lower as the part goes on to make the snare seem more "up front", like a military march that is slowly approaching.

I really wish we got an old military stye drum that. im not sure if i really like the high pitch really muffled sound of the snare we got
