This is a clip of a song I'm still working on, but after being without my Recto for a while, I was eager to record it. I know the playing needs tightening (the song's still quite new). I also plan to quad-track on the final product...But what do you guys think of the mix/song so far?

original (w/ Addictive Drummer)

new version (w/ SSD and new mix using monitors)

If it was on facebook i would click "Like it!" ...but for the drum part "naah!"

Thanks for listening and for the comments, guys.

So you not much for the drums eh? It's probably obvious that I'm a guitarist, and not a drummer, haha!

wow, nice guitar tone!

... and addictive drums, right? ;)

Shit. It's plain as day isn't it, haha! I guess it's pretty stock except for the kick and snare, which were tuned and EQ'ed a good bit.

Great tone and playing.

I definitely agree that the drum parts need to be a little more inspired. Maybe even give the snare a little more 'snap/crack' as well.

Good stuff though. :)

Ok fair enough. I'll mess around some more with the drums and post a revision soon. After a few more listens, I think I can definitely do more interesting fills and cymbal work.

Thanks for the feedback. :kickass:

Chug tastic. Is there anything else in the chain. Really thinking of a rectoverb combo as a jack of all trades amp(well the styles I like anyway).

Guitar chain:
Washburn X50PRO > stock Boss SD-1 > Rectoverb combo > Guitarhack EDGE-1 impulse

SD-1 was used strictly as a boost. Volume all the way up. Gain at 0. Tone a little above noon.

That's it. Pretty basic. I've actually tried micing the combo and I've had better results with 4x12 impulses...maybe that's to be expected. I'm still obviously a n00b to this sort of thing. Thanks for listening dude!

Bump for a new version. (see original post)

Ditched my desktop speakers and got some proper monitors. Also ditched Addictive Drummer and picked up SSD. I rewrote some parts of the song, just messin' around. (not final version by any means)

This is proof that monitors are HUGE factor in mixing. What do you guys think?

You think so? Did you listen to the second version? I personally didn't think it was overbearing, but I'll try bringing it down a notch and see how it sounds. Thanks for listening.

Thanks guys. SSD is a God-send, given my horrible drum mixing skills. (and mixing skills in general...)

Tone is a lot nicer than anything I ever got out of my Rectoverb!!

I don't know what it is about this forum, but no one around here has any love for the single recs and their supposed "fizziness", haha. It's all about taming the presence. I've had mine for 3 years and love it. Chugga chugga heaven. Although I admit there are better alternatives for lead guitar...

I used to own the combo, and I never really got around to recording it because even in the room I didn't really like it.

But at that time I was playing a different guitar, so maybe it would be different with my Les Paul. I dunno... I'll keep an open mind about going back to a Mesa Boogie, although according to my amp tech they have some strange practices that can decrease the life of the tubes - ie... their wattage selector reduces the HT voltage, which puts more strain on the valves.
