Rediscovery part 1

Pfft, there's only so much that can be discussed about a band and their songs. I mean, what the hell did the original poster hope to achieve with this thread?

"I like Rediscovery part 1"

"Yeah me too"

"Yeah and me"

"Me three" etc etc.

Even if a miracle occurred and it somehow became and interesting discussion, a single song definitely doesn't merit it's own thread.

And Marwen certainly has a point, some people seriously need to grow some balls.

Well, for example some of the people on this board know quite a bit of music theory and could discuss some of the compositional aspects of the piece. The OP was a bit bare, but there's no reason why 10+ trigger-happy people have to go ahead and troll it when they have nothing to contribute. Plenty of other people who would enjoy discussing the music as such get turned away from these boards because the quality of discussion is so low and there's obviously nothing going on here. If nobody is going to get into the discussion, then let the thread die a natural death instead of dogpiling it.

We're fine.

Some people are too fragile these days.

Oh god, the "grow a pair" and "fragile" BS is a such a cop-out. I would say the fragile people are the ones who feel the need to turn this forum into a circle-jerk and call other people "fragile" as an excuse to go around trolling their threads. What, do you wanna arm-wrestle or something to prove who's "too fragile"? Macho-toughness on the internet is lame as hell. We're all music geeks, so drop the tough attitude already.

And anyway, it's not your call to make as to what kind of atmosphere the forum should have. By virtue of being a fan of Symphony X just as the rest (supposedly) are, I and anyone else have just as much authority to weigh in on what is "fine" or not. Let the people who want to rave about the band do so without trolling their threads, and have your fun without getting in their faces all the time. :)

Seriously, it's gotten to the point where ANYONE who posts a specific or slightly nerdy question about the band gets trolled into oblivion. What is everyone here for then? Go hang out on some body-building forum if y'all are so obsessed with who has testicles, jeez...this forum is about Symphony X.

 Thank you Batera!:) I'm glad there are people like you on this forum. It really is the fashion on most message boards these days, not just this one, to troll people into oblivion if they post a thread that they perceive as nerdy or unnecessary. I wanted to express how much I love this piece. What other thread should I have put this in? That would mean searching for the right thread that is buried all the way in the back somewhere and when I post it there nobody would even take notice of it since it's an old thread.

The quality of the responses are a mere reflection of the quality of the original post itself.

I have nothing against the guy, and he's free to post whatever he wants. But seriously, what is this:
I love this instrumental! I think it's their best instrumental, it's totally beautiful.:kickass: The song is also very good.

Did he open a discussion of the compositional/theoretic aspect of the piece?
No.
The only thing one can answer such post with is "Okay."

No. Fragile people are, for instance, those with an over-dramatic reaction to things, and who can't handle a natural response from a group of people and instantly decide to leave (calling everybody "wankers") as soon as they see the quality of their post reflected back unto them through the others' collective reaction.

Relax. No need to make this personal now. :)
I wouldn't have taken part of this if I didn't know there is a point behind such attitude.

Yes, most of us are music geeks. Symphony X is a musically respected group, one of the top musicians world-wide if you ask me.

Their message board deserves better than:
People still listen to Symphony X?
Or:
I love this instrumental! I think it's their best instrumental, it's totally beautiful.:kickass: The song is also very good.

Now again, does the latter sound to you like a prelude to a relevant musical discussion? (He's even calling it a "song")

I still have nothing against the guy though, and he's welcome to get over himself and join us back. :)

There you are, I wrote my post and didn't notice yours.

Stick around man, your posts have been good so far.

And as I said, I love the piece too. It's pretty short but it "tells a lot" so to speak. One of my favorite moments from that album.

I dont understand what anyone got bent about. It was a vague post and a few of us replied.... "OK" a bit tongue in cheek and a bit "whats the point" (of the thread). I know I didnt mean anything negative by it. I think its a misunderstanding and over reaction. Putting in New Mythology now.

If there is an empty OP, someone with deeper things to say might come along and breathe some life into the thread. Or the thread will sink down. Or some other people will come in and share how much they like the song too--nothing wrong with that. It's just that two pages of "okay" and other random trolling is really unnecessary, that's all. If people wanna rave about the songs, let them...it's the Symphony X forum and I'll be damned if Romeo and the guys don't want people raving about their music here.

Which brings me to another point. A lot of artists have intimate connections with their forums. Derek Roddy makes regular appearances in his, or at least did last time I was there a while back. When people trolled a lot or got hostile, he stopped coming around for a while because it wasn't worth his time. Something similar happened at the Pearl Drummer's Forum, where the admins basically said a lot of really big-name players had checked it out at one point or another but decided not to participate because of the hostility and dogpiling mentality. The Virgil Donati board, on the other hand, is a pretty polite place with a lot of people who know their stuff, and Virgil stops in from time to time.

Maybe the guys from the band will stop by, maybe they won't. But if you were a member of the band, what kind of board would you be more inclined to participate on? One in which people who just wanna rave about a song get buried in spam replies and told to "grow a pair"? One that welcomes newcomers, or one that drives them away and keeps the numbers down? The prevailing attitude on the board does turn away people. I know because it turned me away for a while the first time I came, and I have friends who would love to engage in discussion about Symphony X but wouldn't find this place fun because the minute they get a little geeky about something they'll get made fun of. Back about a year ago I got trolled for calling Symphony X my musical idols. Uh, mmkay. If you wanna make me leave, you can do that, and I won't come back, but I'm just asking you to reconsider your attitude towards newcomers. A little bit of bubbly enthusiasm for the band is not a bad thing, so just let it pass.

All I can say is, what the fuck? this one got even more derailed than the people listening to SyX thread.

If nobody is going to get into the discussion, then let the thread die a natural death instead of dogpiling it.

This is the best comment i've read so far in this thread, cheers!

I feel bad now..

Alright.. lets talk about Rediscovery. I think its a cool piece but kinda unnecessary to divide it from the total Rediscovery package thing, but now I think I know why they did that, so we can skip through the slow part and get to the awesome parts, just like how they did in Damnation Game with Winters Dream. Overall musically it doesn't stand out anywhere, though the lead keyboard sound is pretty cool. Standard fare here and not to much to talk about.

Good lord what is all this crying.... still ?

There are a few pieces I can think of in the same vein of the Rediscovery segue, the six degrees overature is one of them. They remind me a bit of movie soundtracks. I think its pretty impressive the compositions some of these guys can come up with, way over the head of the average band

I'd say one of the reasons I really like V is that unlike so many concept albums, its interludes are not half-assed. They are all genuinely interesting and honestly I've never felt the urge to skip them. I love the opening keyboard note to Rediscovery, not sure why. Why ruin such a perfect transition by skipping it?

Okay dude.

Haha, hate to admit I kinda felt the same way. :zombie:

Yeah, agreed. I even think it's got a lot to do with the classical influence and the way it makes them approach their music. If you for instance study the form of a symphony or a concerto, you will see that classical composers tend to separate the slow stuff from the heavy stuff, so to speak.

though the lead keyboard sound is pretty cool.

Agreed!
Mind you I once spent a whole night (unsuccessfully) trying to replicate that sound using my soft synth libraries.
You can hear the same (or almost) sound in Through the Looking Glass at about 6:12.
Romeo's Clean guitar tone is also the best.

Hell yeah, that one is awesome too.

I meant Rediscovery 2 you idiot! That IS a song, in case you haven't noticed. I don't have to open with anything "relevant", you can just express your thoughts on this piece. Both of them if you like.

And Marwen, glad you feel the same about it as I. It was a defining moment for SX, that instrumental. Their previous ones, few as they were, have been pretty pretentious-sounding. In fact, didn't Romeo lift most of the music in the other instrumentals from V from Mozart and Verdi??

Yeah, and Bach as well. ;)
The Prelude is from Verdi, the choir thing in Lacrymosa is from Mozart's Requiem, and the kick-ass guitar+harpsichord thing in A Fool's Paradise is taken from a Harpsichord concerto by Bach (which is pretty awesome as well:rock:). I could have missed a couple of other things, but those are the most obvious ones.

All the good music has already been written by people with wigs and stuff.

Exactly.

The Rediscovery Pt.1 & 2 combo is one the greatest ways to close an album...once the intro for Pt. 2 kicks into gear, I feel like....flying
