Hey all,

I'm trying to work out the drum parts to the song but the crazy part around 6:08 is really doing my head in.

The problem is that I think there are some /16th note signature resolutions to get a truly accurate pick of the signatures in that section, the first half I worked out to be the equivalent of

2x 4/4
1x 6/4
7x 4/4

I think having listened to the section so many repeatedly is sending me insane because it's all starting to muddle together inside my head :).

So anyway, I was just wondering if anyone has worked out this section before or would be willing to help me out with it, here's what I've got for the rest of the song up until this point:

Tempo pulse is 195, time signatures indicate the feel, not the tempo.

--------- Intro (Starting after the drum fill)
3x 13/8
16/8

3x 6/8
1x 5/8
3x 6/8
1x 5/8
1x 3/8
8x 6/8

--------- Verse 1
7x 6/4
1x 8/4

7x 5/4
2x 4/4 (half time feel)

---------- Verse 1a
3x 6/8
1x 5/8

-------- Verse 2
7x 6/4
1x 8/4

---------- Verse 2a
7x 5/4
2x 4/4 (half time feel)

------------- Pre-Chorus??
10x 6/8 + 5/8
2x 4/4

-------------- Chorusy thing?
16x 4/4

-------------- Post Chorus
3x 6/4
2x 4/4
8x 4/4
3x 5/8 + 6/8

13x 5/8
4x 6/8
16x 6/8
8x 4/4 (Half tempo)
16x 4/4 (keys + vocals, half tempo)

8x 6/8 + 5/8
2x 4/4

So there are a few ways to go about writing this. On the more detailed level you need to be aware of the eighth-note groupings of 2's and 3's to be able to hit the accents right. But broadly speaking it's just a semi-fast quarter note pulse with varying measure lengths for each "reset" in the pattern. So starting from the measure that begins at 6:00, you can clearly count out the following measures until the break at 6:12 at a fast tempo (you said 195 which sounds about right):

8/4
5/4
9/4
5/4
11/4

Edit: the "break" is then just two counts of silence after the 11/4, which I have excluded here just for simplicity.

From there you can break down each measure into its individual accented sub-groups by eighth notes. E.g., the first 8/4 measure is 3/8 + 3/8 + 10/8.

I'm not sure if that's what you were asking precisely; let me know if that helps.

That helps a lot, thanks :)

My biggest problem was getting the base time signatures worked out, I just couldn't hear them. Now I can work out the fiddly bits a bit more easily :)
