Regntunga Skyar

Whoa. All I can say is, who ripped off who?

The album by Anne-Lie Rydé is from 1992. That should give a hint. But to settle the issue, here's a quote from an interview with Mike which has been posted two years ago:

NEAT INTERVIEW WITH MIKAEL
(...)
(Translated from a swedish Mag)
(...)
"When you record you name the songs different ways. One is called “The Russian” (Beneath the Mire), cause it sounds like Russian music. And then there might be one with the working title Anne-Lie Rydé (Reverie/Harlequin Forest), because I stole it from her. Please don’t ask why I listen to Anne-Lie Rydé."

It's actually first recorded by Monica Zetterlund I think and yeah, it's a blatant rip off. I wrote the riff thinking it "resembled" that song but as I listened to both back to back it was quite obvious what my inspiration was. Well well, you can win em all. It's still a fantastic riff. The chord change from D to E is what I love so much. The Anneli Ryde version is great and so is the rest of that album which is a cover album so it's not her song at least.

Cheers
Mike

I searched the swedish wikipedia and it seems that it is a song from the 1940 film Swing it, magistern!. And the discografie of Monica Zetterlund does not list this song. But I maybe wrong on this. I don't know any swedish. Maybe "regntunga skyar" is a pretty generic title. Sounds like "sky full of rain" to me ... but maybe you'll laugh about this "translation".

You made that song you're own that's for sure. Many won't notice the ripoff, even if they listen to both songs in a short period of time. Similar to Mordet I grottan and ... correct me if I'm wrong ... To Rid the Disease. Ripped off your own song and rarely anyone noticed. ... Well, at least I didn't until I read it here.

well i think this is a part of what makes opeth great,it´s like agalloch ripping of dolly parton or something hehe,it´s such a different element so i dont mind if one or two riffs are stolen.A funny fact:in the interview a previous poster mentioned,we also get to know that the name of the record is Stulna Kyssar(Stolen Kisses),now that´s fuckin´ hilarious:)

Peter talks about that Regntunga Skyar/Harlequin Forest part in this interview at around 30 seconds from the end

This is why Opeth is so good and unique. They get their inspiration
not only from metal, but songs like this one.

I can't wait till the new album and the dvd of course! :kickass:

i just sent the two songs to a buddy who normally doesn´t listen to opeth and he said he didn´t think it was that resemblant.Maybe you have to had listened to the song for a long time to hear it,i dont know

I think it's pretty blatant. I think maybe your friend doesn't have such a great musical ear, perhaps. Or maybe he can't get past the heaviness. Even so...

yeah i agree, think that says alot about his music ear,he´s always praising nine inch nails which i think is garbage so..

NIN isn't garbage ...
like the other dude said, he probably can't hear the basic melody because of the heaviness and stuff ... a lot of people can't recognize tunes when it is played with different instruments.

Ugh, I don't like NIN. My brother practically worships Trent Reznor. I give the dude props for having a different sound but it's just too techno for me.

Something I think is funny is that I wrote the first part of the first riff from To Bid You Farewell before I had ever heard Opeth. Same notes and rhythm and everything, then I heard TBYF and I was like "fuck it's been done before" lol.

It's a very common chord that's played there, and the rhythm is nothing unusual, I'd guess a lot of guitar players stumble upon that riff :notworthy
