Started updating my studio over the holiday. Wanted to go for a darker feel to inspire darker music :heh: Installed Pergo flooring and painted the walls with a pretty crazy looking pattern. Got most of my bass traps hung as well. Anyone have any opinions on changing the orientation of my desk? I know you're supposed to fire the monitors down the room long ways, but putting the desk on the other wall really freed up some room. As you can tell I have very little room to work with. Still have some work left to do(ie: paint trim black, intstall threshold, make curtains from bass trap material etc.)

Looks a MUCH nicer room to work in now mate! Congrats :) Reminds me a little bit of Ryan (catharsis) set up and room layout, from what I've seen pics of anyway. Can't really help with the desk position, I'm not amazing with room acoustics

looks really nice mate. only thing i'd say is if you're having bands in to record, where are you going to seat them? a sofa never goes amiss ;)

Where am I going to fit a sofa? I don't know if you can tell from the pics but this room is really small. 8'x11'.

Nice color for the paint, very relaxing. A couple things I'd change, first being the placement of your desk. The before pic is really the ideal placement for it, since it's longer that way, or at least it appears that way. Second, and not quite so important is that you could use some kind of softer lighting, maybe one of those lamps that you shine onto a wall, preferably somewhere like behind the desk. Just my 2 cents. Looks nice, really! :)

Oh and it might be good to put some sound damping on the door too.

Yes, I think I am going to try moving the desk back tonight. It really changed the sound of my monitors when I moved it. I am going to make more bass traps in the future so I'm sure I'll get one on the door at some point as well as some thinner ones at the early reflection points.

how did you mount your panels?

I put 2 screw in eyelets, one on either side in the middle of the frames on the back. Then I screwed one eyelet into the corner where the walls meet. I attached some braided steel cable to the first eyelet(on the trap), then went through the wall eyelet, then back through the other eyelet(on the trap). The mounting system turned out to be sturdier than all get-out.

we ripped that room a new one!

Yadam?

Awesome! I will have to try that method...

Wow, I can't believe you actually understood what I meant. Its hard to describe in words how the cable runs but it is very simple.

If you use this method make sure you get the SMALLEST cable they have as it is very hard to cut. The one i bougt is very thin and is rated for like 100lbs. You can buy it by the foot at your local hardware store.
