Religious Group Forces Cancellation of "Black Mass" in Australia

I think most bands that are still overtly satanic do so with a tongue-in-cheek approach, like Skeletonwitch*; and I don't think many embrace the idea with any degree of sincerity

I totally agree with you. The only "satan" bands that annoy me are the ones who really do take it seriously, and even then, they're kind of hilarious in a sad way.

Like, this one band. I was playing a show, and one of the other locals comes out with this awesome epic keyboard intro. Lead singer has his face painted white with the inverted cross on his forehead in black, and pulls out a mass of meat from a bag.

"DO YOU KNOW WHAT THIS IS!?"

Audience is silent.

"THIS.. IS... A GOAT HEAD!!"

Then the keyboard player left and they played terribly. That night is infamous. XD I also used to have a band member who was a Satanist, and, I shit you not.. he left the band because I got married Catholic. And because he felt I was incapable of being "brutal" because I'm Catholic, because apparently, screaming about ripping out people's eyeballs isn't hard-core enough for a true Satanist.

I believe I was compared to Gwen Stefani at some point.

WHAT THE HELL! :loco:

Wow. Unbelievable how much the word loser applies to these idiots. You know, the whole shock value in metal with the goats, blood, inverted crosses and etc really has no effect anymore. I vividly remember watching a sucky Black Metal band at L'Amours in Brooklyn years ago, the room almost empty:

(Vocalist) "BROOKLYN, MAKE SOME NOISE FOR SATAN!"

(One of the 5 people in the crowd) "SHUT THE FUCK UP!!"

Wow, what a tool. This guy needs some tickets to Disney World or something. Go be happy, because this whole grim, black metal lifestyle is for losers. I must say though, screaming about ripping out people's eyeballs is just as bad as being a Black Metal retard.

And by the way, I like Black Metal. The music is often really good. I just hate some of the tools.

Catholicism not brutal enough? Hasn't he ever heard of the Inquisition?

That's exactly what I was thinking.

But as you know...

Yeah, she should be singing in a hilariously off-key, thick accented pseudo-majestic voice with regards to prancing unicorns and rainbows like Angra right? That's absolutely cool.

Duchess, I think it's really really really really shitty of a dude to quit your band because of YOUR personal choice and decisions. I'm good friends with a few Christian metalheads who are in otherwise secular metal bands and there's no problem. I think as long as there's no imposition, it's all fair game and should be respected.

With that out of the way, Satanism whether serious (Totally fine by me. My username comes off a song from a left-hand-pathist band) or tongue-in-cheek, is metal. Metal is not pretty, or beautiful, or whatever. It's grimey, disgusting, contains distorted riffs, primal vibes, etc, in some sort of capacity. As DcCowboys said, the inverted cross' meaning has subsequently been changed by anti-Christians, or those who just want something to rebel against. Metal is that outlet, and that's what it's commonly for. Even in the ProgPower scene we have more "Pagan's Mind" and bands like Evergrey who put out "The Inner Circle" than we have Christian stuff (at least, in terms of popularity). Even Orphaned Land is rebellious against common society in that they're of the belief that all beliefs have a distinct-but-equal voice. That's secularism at its core! It's just how it is. And mind you, there are a good batch of Christian-leaning metal bands (and NON-metal bands) that I've dug. You can totally deconstruct that and argue the Christian bands rebel against the secular ones because they make up the majority in the metal scene. Though my point still stands, it's all about opposition.

At the end of the day, the point I'm making is that it's less about the Christianity, or lack of thereof, and more about the outlet to stick a finger to the face of everyone else that makes metal, metal.

BTW Angrarules, I'm not so much saying that Angra isn't cool (I personally hate them though. Some killer riffs and songwriting but the vocals kill it for me) as I am trying to say that you can poke fun at everything that is metal. You can't actually take one batch of it with utmost seriousness and then laugh at the rest of it. It's all equally silly. :D

First of all, you are 100% wrong when it comes to Angra's message and lyrical themes. For instance, did you know Aurora Consurgens had its lyrics based exclusively on certain mental disorders and how one's mind would rationalize differently based on each and everyone of them? Temple of Shadows deals with the Crusades, Holy Land is a concept album based on the discovery and colonization of Brazil by the Portuguese... Quite different topics than your comment about unicorns and rainbows. Your attempt at making fun of Angra's themes really make no sense, cause obviously you didn't know what you were talking about.

HOWEVER,

I will agree 100% with you that everything in metal has the potential of being made fun of, and believe me, I do it a lot. Metal is not and it will never meant to be serious. I do think though, that each and every one of us has the right to pick and choose which ones are at least offering something valuable and interesting other than the music itself.

For instance, for me (and I mean the theme/lyrical value):

A concept album such as the ones I mentioned above, a concept album about real issues (social, whatever) = interesting and valuable.

An album where the band talks about how much they praise Satan, how much they can drink or ripping people's eyes off = silly, uninteresting, zero value.

Does that mean I don't enjoy that type of music? Absolutely not. Give me a beer and put on Born to Party by Municipal Waste, and I guarantee you a hell of a time!

And by the way, I noticed this makes it two threads for you back on the ProgPower forum. Welcome back. I do sincerely hate how condescending you sound sometimes, but you're always bringing some real valuable input into the discussions and that's a big plus.

*yawn*. Nope, unicorns and rainbows. ;)

Anyways in all seriousness, how is this:

"Glorious - You'll lead the way
To free the world from these chains
Glorious - Your story now begins, Oh!
Fire!
Unleash the angel of the Light
Thank him for bringing us to life
Lucifer is just a name! "

At all interesting and or/valuable? You like this stuff? Fair enough. I think it's poorly written and cheesy (not in a good way mind you, but cheesy in a "hey we're going to try to write something meaningful and make meaningful mehtulz"). Give me Satan any day of the week. I don't even believe in that shit either, but it's just badass. IMO one of the greatest moments in all of metal history is when Nocturno Culto screams for Satan in Darkthrone's "Quintessence."

I think if you take it into context, within the concept of the album (the story), it's not cheesy for the sake of being metal. Ripping eyeballs out of someone's face, however, IS cheesy for the sake of being metuhl like you said.

I'll give you that though, Quintessence is pretty bad-ass!

I know, right!? We DRINK BLOOD in CHURCH!!

:kickass:

OH! And yes, the lyrics about ripping out people's eyeballs was definitely cheesy for the sake of being cheesy. With my old band, I loved doing lyrics like that because it was funny. It was entertaining. Unfortunately, my old band members thought I was being serious about it. XD No, guys. I'm not seriously getting off to the idea of ripping off someone's skin.. lol

That's why I'm so happy that A Sound of Thunder respects my views. If you ever see us live, you'll be able to see our masterpiece; BLOOD VOMIT.

"He is risen up
Out of the blackness
Chaos
The last of the prophets
Sinister
A sickening monstrous sight"

I'm sorry, euleria, what did you say?

Fortunately I'm completely unable to understand Portnoy's vocals when he does cookie monster voice. Comes in handy, especially on BC&SL.

If DT isn't trying to be serious, why don't they ever appear to be enjoying themselves onstage?

Potnoy answered your questions a little while ago.

Why?
'Cause they're not.
