Removing one's online presence

Can't do it. Not possible. There'll be a backup somewhere where you never even thought of. Facebook and MySpace never delete profiles, just make them inactive. Google caches pages. Best bet is to never post anything.

The wayback machine will prolly still have you.

And as phloggy pointed out, Google is basically caching everything that's ever been Googled.

... of course, if we can erase Josh's heart..... *strokes chin*

:heh:

Seriously, though, you'd be able to get Deron to wipe all of your posts on UM, but that won't get rid of anyone who has quoted anything you've said though, and there's likely internet archives out there which have copies of everything on there too.

How about, if anyone raises an issue with something you've said, just admit you were a dick when you said it (should it have been a dicky thing you said, of course)?

I was thinking the other day how some of my posts on here would have fucked up my chances on getting a job with ASIO. :) I could delete them, but they'd still find stuff they wouldn't like. Not that I'm intending on applying for a job there in any case.

It's ASIO.

They tend to suck at background checks and usually don't go for internet searches.

But it is funny how many employers do actually do internet searches on employees and potential employees -looking for blogs, myspaces and such.
Which is why you never give away your screen-name(s) to workmates or employers.

Had a friend get in a shitload of trouble because his boss looked up his name in Google and the top 5 results were racist & sexist rants by a guy with the same name and so it was assumed it was my mate.
He actually had to take the case before the board of directors, because his boss wanted to fire him because of the views of another.

such is the age we live in really.

Ah I see. What kinds of checks do ASIO do then? I've read (probably on their website) that they're pretty obtrusive.

Yeah I don't think I'd be giving out my username to any potential employers. Wouldn't your friend's boss have been able to do a bit of detective work to determine whether or not it was him who made the comments?

They can be but my dealings with ASIO background checks for work was they honestly didn't look very deep, as they didn't know much about my family and my parents work with the Federal Government on projects such as the Jarvis Bay Navel base and ranger mine.

It all depends on what kind of job you are going for, it's all relative to how deep they check.

and any high level public service job tends to come with a basic ASIO check, if you have to get a special security clearance.

My mate's boss was a dickhead who never looked deeply into things and my mate has a fairly uncommon name.
Plus, we think that he was looking for any or all excuses to get rid of my mate and the net can provide that -especially if people have spoken about you or they can find anything that resembles you in any fashion.
