Resident Evil 5

American horror means make everything really quiet, build up suspence with the music, then have something pop out angrily. Some filmmakers have surpassed this by making everything really quiet, building up suspence with the music, then have something non-threatening pop out to relive stress before the angry thing pops out one second later.

And we wonder why the arts are dieing on this side of the globe.

I believe our own imagination can exceed deeper boundaries than what can be caught on film. I remember the first scene of the Japanese Ring movie, this girl went alone into the dark living room, suddenly you could sense something's going on, then she looks behind her back and sees something that makes her scream, I think it was amazing.

Being alone in a dark place, when you get this feeling you're not alone, that really gets your imagination going. Especially when you turn around and notice someone's looking at you.

I remember a couple of cool moments from M. Night Shyamalan's movies. One is from Signs, when Mel Gibson is saying good night to his son, then looks out the window and there's this alien creature staring at him from another rooftop. Another's from the Village, those two scenes with the red-cloaked monsters in the forest are just fucking epic. I recommend to check these out.

+1

Ringu movies were epic. Then Hollywood raped them!!!! Shyamalan's movies are fucking great. Especially 'Signs' was a incredible movie! The ending of 'The Village' just ruined the movie for me.

Same. I generally like the idea of a community of people living in a sanctuary that has a line to a dark surrounding world where peril awaits if you cross. But they fucked it up.

No you're totally right. I understand that, and I too enjoy the old horror survival feeling. The games are definitely different, and it will be interesting to see how RE6 plays out because Capcom has stated that they are "rebooting" the series... which I believe implies the storyline will be fresh with new characters and such, but it would be sweet if they also somehow combined the older RE games with the newer RE games. Like the scary camera angles and zombies of the old games with the action-packed co-op of the new games. No idea how that would work, but who knows maybe Capcom will deliver!

I think I remember them saying that a couple years ago, too. But I could be remembering wrong. Still, I hope they do something exciting. They should be sure to update a lot of the old things that have no reason to still be a part of the game mechanics. Like not being able to shoot while moving. That just doesn't even make any sense. It's not scary, just frustrating and illogical.

That feeling truly is the scariest thing to me, and that example from Signs is perfect. I also remember the scene where the hand reaches out from under the door. Or when they're in the basement, and the young son leans against the grated vent, where you see the hand and it just kills you waiting for it to move, or worse, not seeing it until it grabs him. I also remember the scene in 6th sense where that kid is talking to him, but nothing seems wrong about him, then the kid turns around and you see the back of his head blown off.

Shyamalan's movies for me just somehow seem to get worse.
First there were like The Sixth Sense and Signs which were great, then there was The Village which was good except indeed the ending, then there was the Lady in the Water which I thought was boring and then there was the Happening which I count to one of the worst movies ever made. Hope he comes up with a really strong one again.

I recently saw Knowing, that new movie with Nicholas Cage, with no expectations (considering the movies he's in are usually either great or absolutely terrible) and I was surprised.

It was actually not too bad. I really liked it up until the ending.

Well, I'm going to have to disagree with you here. If the devs added the ability to shoot while moving, the whole game's mechanics would have to be re-balanced. The point is that you are meant to have to move around and melee and always be looking behind you and make sure your partner covers your back when necessary. It's already enough of a rambo style game as is, moving while shooting would just be ridiculous and make it like every other shooter out there. Sure, it may not be "scary," but it does make the intensity level rise and the game would be too easy if you could just run and spray.

I can see what you mean, and in my opinion you're mostly right. In the past, I might have even agreed with you completely. However, after playing Dead Space, I think they proved that you can do that without having it be too much like an action shooter.

Nevertheless, it would definitely mean rebalancing the whole system. But if they're rebooting the series anyway, then I don't see why not.

I've also played RE 5, though only as co-op with my friend and we've finished game on every difficulty, and it's fucking great game. But what I think that was annoying in the game, was that you couldn't move while using melee. It was frustrating when there was an enemy that was always an enemy that you couldn't hit since he was a bit too far away, and then you had to quit the melee mode, move few inches and then enter melee mode again, and then strike. Enemy could always strike before. But what I found funny is that the game developer of RE5 said that "Without horror, there's no Resident Evil." I didn't find anything scary in RE5. It ok with me since it is a great game but if it was intended to be a horror game, it didn't quite succeed.

Delanoir: Yeah that's fair, it would definitely be legitimate and work if they designed the game around it, I think I misunderstood and thought you meant that they should have just put moving while shooting in RE5 how it is right now, which is what many people on RE forums wanted.

Warlord: You mean be able to knife while moving? I can see why you say that, as I've had many frustrating times with that myself, but then again, if you had two people running while knifing (which temporarily stuns normal enemies), there wouldn't ever be a need to use guns unless there were more than 2 enemies coming at you. It's kind of balanced on the fact that you can only stop and pull out a knife and connect the hit when you are basically touching your enemy. But yeah, as far as "horror" goes it did not succeed, however I think that was the dev's choice to make the game like this.

 Wtf? I've never heard of such a version! That sounds so retarded lol.

i think you see it:D
it was the first time i played a german RE game(when it came out, i couldnt wait and didn't care about the version... mistake!!!that's why i buy any game from the UK nowadays) but i also played the ntsc version of RE2, because i had no choice. it worked on my old ps1 but the blood was violet) it looked sooo stupid, you can imagine that:D i never again.
yeah, i agree with the rest of what you wrote, especially the *one zombie is more scary than 10 villager*thing.obviously you totally understood what i meant:D
so i came to the conclusion that RE 4 shocks with its adrenalin driven moments (the chainsaw guy in the village for example, i wasnt scared or shocked but i was really afraid of him because i had to be so fast:lol:)and with a scary atmosphere.
but it just lacks the : ''fuck you!we're zombies,we kill anything'' (which also counts for the animals)attitude. i mean, in RE4 they got guard(!) dogs, infected with the parasite..

btw, anyone ever watched cannibal holocaust:lol:?

Yeah... the insta-kill enemies definitely make you tense and cringe every time they are nearby no matter how unscary they actually are or look. I mean the same would apply even if we were pitted against tooth faries or something, the fact that it only takes one hit is just... :p

And now that I think about it more, zombies srsly ftw. They were sweet because of the funny howling noises they would make when you wandered close, whereas villagers just piss the fuck out of me whenever they grab me from behind (RE5) lol. More like a "THIS IS WAR YOU BITCHES" attitude rather than a "Shit there's a creepyass dude 'round the corner, lol."

I wish RE5 had a darker setting. Most of it is either bright or well-lit enough to see normally. I want pitch black darkness haha.

Thank god he didn't say "without RE, there's no horror." I think what he said just implies to RE being a shooting game with horror-themed spice.

Yeah well it's maybe stupid you can't shoot while running, but in real life you can only use pistols and small automatic guns while running. The aim would also be more messy tho.
