For the guys who also take the entire sample down a bit, don't you get a bit of an irregular low end?

No, because there's so much low end build up on the fast parts that it makes up for the lower volume of the kicks.
 
Dude this is a good question. I actually mixed TWO different bass drum samples.

I had dfh superior on one track doing the double bass, and a crappy zoom drum machine hitting at the same time.

It sounds a 100% better than the dfh on its own (which is not hard because it was machinegun city) but now it is passable.

Actually it isnt....yet. I do need to humaize it a bit, mess with fluctuating levels and add fx etc etc but dry it sounds like this (there is a double bass part about two thirds into the song):

BTW...What are the best effects to use on bass drum samples if you have waves? The clip above is dry (any fx you hear are wet during the recording)
