Roll Call: Fates Warning in Hartford, CT on 6/4

Hey! No one said hi to me!

Oh well....so how did everyone enjoy the show?

Here's my take -

First off, it was freakin hot as hell in there. One of the hottest shows I've ever been to and I didn't even really jump around or exert myself.

So I caught Shadow Sanctuary (?) or something along those lines and was pissed I forgot my pad and pen to write down quotes, but I do remember - "Metal is not a competition, it is an alliance" what? That dude was well beyond his prime, but they had loads of fun up there and really enjoyed themselves.

I was one of like 8 people watching Indamnum after deciding I didn't wanna listen to Infinite Descent no matter how hot the lead singer may be. I was happy with my choice and enjoyed the soothing sounds of Indamnum.

Did anyone else catch Impuria? How crap that guitarist can freakin shred!!! Weird mix of style and vocals too - was pleasantly surprised by their skill.

Ok, onto the main show -

Never saw Fates before. I've seen Alder with Redemption however. I got into the first 3 Fates albums before listening to the Alder-era stuff, of which my exposure is limited to No Exit and Parallels (which does fall into one of my top 5 all times though)....so....

I saw Parallels played start to finish with the proper line-up....enough said. Really, it couldn't have gotten any better for me. That was one of my "dreams" to see that album being played and they pulled it off flawlessly imo.

No complaints about the show. Aresti shredded, Alder soared, and Zonder was just a sight to see.

All the other songs were just icing on the the cake.

And to add to the awesome night, I met Mr.John Arch himself :notworthy

Did John Arch take the stage at any point?

Nope.

Going into the show, I couldn't help but let the idea of him coming up on stage and doing a couple of songs (since he is a CT local) creep into my head.

Yes it would have been awesome and I guess in that sense the show could have been better. There was one little voice in the back of my mind just waiting for them to call him out and have him come up, but it never happened.

I told Arch that Awaken is my all time favorite album and would die to see him up there singing those songs.

But in the end, it was a Parallels reunion tour, so I think it was only right to stick with that line-up and that era.

Fates put on a great show. I thought Ray did a very good job considering how sometimes he can be a little off. The band was tight as hell, as expected.

Now... 120 F inside the venue was fucking horrible. Never been to a hotter show in my life. Not even in Brazil.

My God, what was up with that? Luckily I had a friend to dump water on me every now and then, but even that didn't do much. Also loved the moshers during Myopia.

That being said, can somebody list the songs FW played after the Parallels set? I'm admittedly very new to them, having only heard that album a few times before seeing them play, but I really liked what I heard.

Fates ruled!! I think that show is tied with the PP set, but maybe this one was a little better because of Mark Zonder's presence, I love his drumming personality so much. I had a center-spot down on the floor so I could see straight on to the drum kit. \m/ It was a very hot show but I've actually been to worse. There's been a couple where I was waiting second to second to collapse from the heat. Anyways despite rush-hour traffic jams and getting lost in Hartford (I get lost going anywhere) I got there in time to see all but two of the bands.

I think having that fan in the second-stage room is a cool, subtle technique to get people to hang out in there watching second-stage bands :) I saw the early power metal bands on the main stage and second stage. I watched on song from Infinite Descent and then also watched the Indamnum band's whole set, so I was in there too for them. Then I watched Myopia because of people mentioning them on this board and I liked them decently enough. I watched Vengeance too - was it my ears or did they play a teaser of Rush "La Villa Strangiata" during one of their songs? I don't know why the venue ran the bands at the same time - it might've been better for the bands' to have them play between each other. It's like when radio stations time their commercials to air at the same time. (I had that issue too driving out because I misjudged how many CDs I'd need and ended up radio-surfing while on 84 in CT. Could not find anything!!!) Fates I already mentioned, I had to stay for their whole set and it was so worth it! All in all it was a great show night and I'm really glad for it because I don't know of any other shows I want to go to until ProgPower in Sept, so that was both my summer kick-off and conclusion (ha).

I didn't recognize any forumers but to be honest I am really awkward about saying hi to random people (especially when they're with their friends).

But overall, good times. I was really stoked to see the large number of young kids in the place, including kids who didn't "look like" typical prog metal heads, but seemed to enjoy the music. That is a great thing. Also the fact that the place was so full anyway. Good to see, very good to see.

I enjoyed the show very much despite the few flubs here and there etc. The heat was crazy!!!! WTF with that venue? I also hate the sound at the Webster. It was like a high school renunion, I could turn without seeing someone I knew.
Ray sounded really good on some songs and not so good on others, which is a shame because he is one of my all time favorite singers and I always recall seeing them play those songs live "back in the day".

Overall, great show and I'm glad I went.

They also played Quietus in between Perfect Day and Through Different Eyes.

That show was incredible in spite of the ridiculous heat. I definitely enjoyed it more than their ProgPower set last year, and they seemed to get a great crowd response. I hope they gain some new fans from this. I'm the blind dude who some of you may remember from last year's PP by the way.

Heyy, I remember chatting with you last night! I was definitely converted, for one... I was pleasantly surprised by the younger crowd, too. At one point there were two kids behind me who said they were 13. The earlier they get into it, the better! :D

Also, my mom was back at the bar and said that she had talked to two guys, one of them wearing a PP III shirt -- anyone from here?

I think I remember you...were you the dude who said you'd just heard Parallels and Spectre Within recently?

No, but I know who you're talking about! I was the girl who was near him who said she heard Parallels recently. (And sorry if I seemed a bit too cold with the girlfriend comment -- I had a bad experience with somebody who asked me a similar question recently and I was on edge. I apologize!)

I have to say that it was great to see the younger kids into Fates at the show. I honestly thought (and was kinda joking about it with my friends outside the venue) that most of the teenagers there were probably there to see their friends playing in the opening bands, which is most likely true. Nice amount of younger kids singing along during Fates though, even in the front row.

Pretty cool that John Arch was there too, although I'd have loved to see him actually get on stage with FW.

I've been to the Webster hundreds of times. I have *never* experienced anything like that, though. It felt like there was no air inside that venue. A couple of times before Fates came on, we had to step outside for a little while. It didn't help that I decided to wear a soccer jersey to the show (very VERY poor choice of clothing considering the temperature)...

Yeah, that was partly true in my case - I had mainly gone out to see Infinite Descent since I dug them the other times I saw them - but I really wanted to see what FW was like, since they were one of those bands who I've heard mentioned in the same breath as other bands I'm into, but never got around to checking out.

The first time I went to the Webster was for Symphony X in April 2008. It was quite the opposite from this - it was freezing outside, yet they kept blasting the air conditioning!

No problem. Glad you enjoyed FW's set, and I hope you enjoy the rest of their studio albums as much as I do!

I wasn't there for this particular tour (caught it in NYC), but I'd much rather be at a show with AC then not. Most singers would disagree with this though, understandably so.

Nevermore/Dimmu/COB/Hypocrisy tour stop in 2002 at L'Amours in Brooklyn was also unbearably hot. The only difference is that it was in December.

Why? Is it harder to sing when its cold because of your body temperature?

I was actually afraid they'd cut their set short because of the heat. When they started playing "Nothing Left To Say", I was a little worried that they'd end with that since they closed with it in LA back in March. The Gathering had to drop their encore at Club Rebel in NYC back in '07 because of the heat. I'm not sure which show was more unbearably hot.

I'm also glad they played some stuff from the last three albums during their encore. I'd love to see all of APSOG live since I was only ten years old when that album was released, but that's probably not going to happen, especially since it seems like the album is a love-it-or-hate-it thing.

I thought Fates put on a great show. I've seen them 4 times before this and although Ray doesn't sing the high notes anymore, I think he sounded great. The rest of the band was tight too. I'm glad I made the 3.5 hr drive to see this show- who knows if I 'll ever get to see them again.
This was my first experience with the Webster and it was NOT a good one. That was, without a doubt, the hottest venue that I 've ever been in. No excuse for that heat!!!!!
