The app "Universal Androot" gives you root access on many Android phones without having to follow complicated instructions.
You install the app, run it, press one button and that's it. Simple as that. And what's even cooler, is the fact that you can't brick your phone using this method, as the app doesn't flash anything.
That means you can just run the app and try it, regardless of which device or android version you're using. It either works or it doesn't.
And it's worth a try, my ol' G1 isn't even listed as a supported device, yet it worked like a charm.
Going to a custom rom from there was a bit of a headache, but so worth it.
