Router Questions fellow nerds!

What do you use? Would you recommend it? What brands/models would you suggest I get? I bought one years ago, and it works for about two days then craps out and won't work for months. It's been that way through four different ISP's, so I know it's the router.

Pretty much all consumer routers suck warm sick through a short straw. I've resigned myself to replacing them every few months so I buy whatever is cheap and supports dhcp reservations.

Linksys aint bad from my experience, but I've never owned one so I don't know long term

I'm using Netgear and it's held up pretty well. Actually it's a wireless modem, though.

I have a linksys that's held on for the last couple of years just fine, no issues with it.

One more thumbs up for linksys by cisco. If you ever lose your connection the most reliable fix is to unplug router and modem for about 30 seconds and then plug back in...Give it about a minute and it will re-establish your I.P.Address and it should kick ass..........

usually trying to buy the cheapest type is the worst thing you can do since they're the ones that always need to be replaced, and are generally crap.

Go for a middle-priced one, and make sure to read around about them.

I use a D-link wireless router, it' has a few problems but other than that it works fine, try going for the newest model, the model i have seems like it has a lot of firmware issues, i hate to reset mine twice.

D-Link has issues in general. I have had nothing but bad luck with D-Link and these pieces of shit like to go in and out intermittently.

I currently use a Netgear Rangemax Wireless router. I previously had a Linksys but due to its life expectancy, it finally died on me. I'm usually against Wireless but I have a laptop now. I will run out of ports because of the IDS I'm building and the possibility of implementation of a DMZ. Because of these, I also need Wireless for my PS3.

D-Link and Ativa are the brands I've tried in the past, and both have given me nothing but trouble. So far it looks like Linksys is the way to go. My cousin has a wireless one and it's been working solid for about two years, no resetting at all needed. And after all your thoughts on it, I believe I know what I want.

Just get a basic linksys router. You can get a range-plus is needed but it's not something you absolutely need.

They last, and problems are limited (unless you have no idea what you are doing).

my cheap POS router I have now has the cheapest damn wireless I've ever seen, but it can still be detected through our whole house and for a small portion of outside our house. I'm less worried about wireless access though, because my PC and 360 are connected via Ethernet. We only have one wireless device in the house, our roommate's laptop. But she's a bitch dumbass fucker and bought it two years ago and has only booted it up maybe six times since. I wish I had that kind of expendable cash.

yeah the dd-wrt stuff for the linksys looks like quality. I sard messing with it, though.


I've always had linksys routers, just because it's usually what's cheapest and most plentiful when I go shopping for one. Never have had any problems with them besides the occasional need to restart once every other month maybe.

Though after a few years of use the one at my parent's house got to the point where it required a daily restart, so they just trashed it and got another, which is still chugging along.
