I have the FA-66 interface (firewire) and it has the S/pdif I/O.
Now what I need to know is if I can use that to plug a device to get more inputs ? I know you can do that with interfaces like the Saffire 40 but is it specific to only certain interfaces ?

You could look up on the internet, and see a couple of other interfaces for yourself. Anyway, it's not Focusrite proprietary standard - S/pdif is like a consumer version of AES/EBU international standard. It can carry up to 2 channels of audio, so you can use some other device with S/pdif output to get 2 more inputs for your interface. Just make sure that that other device is set as master clock, and FA-55 set as slave.
