I lived in Memphis during the 80's, and I will tell you that Al Gore is one of the smartest and most honest politicians ever to hold public office. This guy totally cares about people, and he never lost sight that his job was as a public servant - not a career politician who makes a living from special interest groups. Al Gore fucking rules. I voted for him in 2000 - and I was a registered Republican at the time.

I agree about the Sagan book, but about not catering to special interest I'd say you're wrong on the grounds of ass-kissing to the religious right (with moral superiority in the Playboy Mansion event and suggestions of creationism being taught in public schools, just for starters, in the 2000 election). No, I don't know what went on in the eighties, but I've seen the fucker overstate global warming and pander to the lunatic fringe that wants the teaching of the planet to be a few thousand years old passed off as science, so I frankly don't give a fuck what he did in the eighties when what he's doing now is just what I hate in politicians.
