Savatage Slightly Overlooked Gems!!!

A friend of mine, locally, asked me to make a compilation of Savatage material to introduce the band to him. I told him, that I would do it with pleasure! With that said, I have to post these two songs, just because I want to. Listen to Criss' riffs in Shotgun Innocence and tell me that he wasn't a god!



Why Shotgun wasn't included in the original release is beyond me!!!

Shotgun Innocence in particular is awesome. I think those two songs, however, don't really gel with the general atmosphere of Edge of Thorns, which is probably why they were initially left off and then just included as bonus tracks.

Listen to Criss' riffs in Shotgun Innocence and tell me that he wasn't a god!

They're good riffs but "24 Hours Ago" is my favorite of his riffs. Especially the ending part.

And I can't believe it's been almost 16 years since he passed away. It's just not fair

Mel, both tracks are available on a couple of releases. Shotgun Innocence is available on the Nuclear Blast standard version of Poets and Madmen. Forever After is available on both the "From The Gutter To The Stage" and "Edge Of Thorns" SPV re-release version.

I bought an import version of From the Gutter to the Stage back in the day just to get those two tracks. Oh those pre internet days.

All the eras of Savatage rock, but, I keep running into 'fans' that stopped listening after Handful of Rain. Its a crime, IMO, to not be aware of the greatness of Wake of Magellan. Dude, the first 4 songs on there are so transcendent.

Oh, I've listened. Just not really fond of WOM. In my view, it should have been the first TSO album.

Love DWD and Poets, though.

And Shotgun Innocence would definitely be in my top 10 all time Sava songs.

Wake of Magellan is the album that really made the whole Savatage thing click with me. After that album made sense, I went into completist mode! I'm wearing my Wake Of Magellan tour shirt as I type this. I'm such a fanboy!

How fitting that I should start reading this post while listening to the song "Wake of Magellan" which came up on random. That is probably my second favorite SavaCD after Streets. It's really amazing, and I don't think it fits with TSO at all. Definitely Savatage.

I was blown away the first time I heard Shotgun Innocence; it was a few years after Criss' passing and it was quite moving to hear a song I had never heard before; definitely a greatly underrated tune.

I think this one could have fit on the album; not Forever After though.

Are there any albums in the Sav catalog that get overlooked? They all seem to have a strong pulse with the fanbase in one way or another, MAYBE one could make a case that Handful of Rain and Fight for the Rock could be construed as unsung gems, but even those are lauded by a good portion of the fans. As for WOM, it completely collapses under the weight of itself, just too much of everything built around a drawn out concept, no thanks, my least fave Sav album, so, here's a personal ranking:

Power of the Night
Streets

Wow, talk about a tough thing to do. I've been listening to them for the past 20 years so ranking the albums tends to change all of the time. That being said, my list would look like this today:

5. Hall of the Mountain King
6. Poets and Madmen
7. Dead Winter Dead
8. Dungeons Are Calling

Really, I listen to all of the albums regularly other than the last two. They only get random songs like "Power of the Night" and "Hyde".
