Hi!

I'm reaching out to those of you who are into norwegian black metal.
Being a girl from Norway myself, I have chosen this topic as a project in
my language class.

I would very much appreciate inputs on my following questions:

Question 1: Would you say the lyrics were a main factor for you developing
an interest for NBM?
Question 2: What do you expect from norwegian black metal lyrics? (i.e.
depictions of nature, paganism, satanism, etc)
Question 3: What NBM band wrote the lyrics that meant the most to you
personally, which lyrics (or track) would this be, and why?
Question 4: Have you every considered to study - or in fact studied - the
norwegian language solely because of your fascination for NBM?
Question 5: Please have a moment to analyze the following text. What does
these lyrics mean to you?
(I've chosen 'Burzum - Dunkelheit' because
- (a) it's in english (so you wouldn't have to translate it through Google
Translate), and
- (b) because it's subject to quite different interpretations:

When night falls, she cloaks the world in impenetrable darkness.

A chill rises from the soil and contaminates the air

suddenly... life has new meaning.

Thank you for your time.

I say that the lyrics are a main factor.

I like Pagan, Satanic, Nature, Cold etc.

Burzum has the most meaningful lyrics to me. Filosofem is musical and lyrical genius.

Yeah, I'm trying to learn a bit of Norwegian so I can understand the lyrics better. I know quite a few words.

I think Dunkelheit is about what gives life meaning. It is about spiritual energy and stuff giving life meaning. Maybe consciousness or something?

At first, I thought it was about christianization. However, because the chill rises from the soil, it is probably something more natural. But why does it contaminate the air and then give life new meaning. I should ask Varg about that on Google plus. It's a pretty strange passage.

Pro tip: The song that you're referring to as "Dunkelheit" is called "Burzum" and is part of perhaps the biggest title misconception that I've heard of due to the German record label.

Question 1: Would you say the lyrics were a main factor for you developing
an interest for NBM?

No, it was sound of the music, especially the atmosphere

Question 2: What do you expect from norwegian black metal lyrics? (i.e.
depictions of nature, paganism, satanism, etc)

It depends on the band. I'm open to any subject if it's done well.

Question 3: What NBM band wrote the lyrics that meant the most to you
personally, which lyrics (or track) would this be, and why?

Ildjarn's lyrics have the most meaning to me. He generally wrote songs about nature, hate and existence. "Eksistens Jeger" has my favorite lyrics by him. I like his lyrics because you can see that he put some thought into them and they are sometimes very personal.

Question 4: Have you every considered to study - or in fact studied - the
norwegian language solely because of your fascination for NBM?

No, but I have learned quite a few words while enjoying the music.

Question 5: Please have a moment to analyze the following text. What does
these lyrics mean to you?
(I've chosen 'Burzum - Dunkelheit' because

Given that this is the self-titled song of Burzum, I assume that these lyrics capture the distilled essence of the vision of Varg Vikernes for what type of feeling he wanted Burzum to communicate through music.

Question 1: Would you say the lyrics were a main factor for you developing
an interest for NBM?

No, satan and nature are certainly sexy, but it's the music and atmosphere of the sound that caught and sustained my interest.

Question 2: What do you expect from norwegian black metal lyrics? (i.e.
depictions of nature, paganism, satanism, etc)

Nothing in particular. I don't care about the lyrics because 1) they usually can't be understood and 2) black metal lyrics usually aren't that good on their own merit.

Question 3: What NBM band wrote the lyrics that meant the most to you
personally, which lyrics (or track) would this be, and why?

This does not apply to me.

Question 4: Have you every considered to study - or in fact studied - the
norwegian language solely because of your fascination for NBM?

No.

Question 5: Please have a moment to analyze the following text. What does
these lyrics mean to you?

Nothing. They're bad lyrics. Fortunately, Varg doesn't rely on his poetry for his daily bread.
