I'm wondering if there's any of you that can help me out?

I'm looking for a decent 4x12" cab to record an EP with near the beginning of April. Something of decent quality with V30's, Mesa would be preferred but I'd also consider a Engl or Orange, maybe even a Blackstar?

Gone through a few hire companies and no-one in Scotland has anything other than Marshall/Laney. Asked STS Touring in Manchester about hiring one but shipping is £180 each way!!!!

I'm needing it for about a week, and am willing to pay about £100 for the hire.

If anyone can help me out then it would be greatly appreciated!

thomann.co.uk offers 30 days money back. just buy it and send it back!

Seems like a good plan, though I've looked into getting it sent back and I'm struggling to find a courier who'll ship something that size to germany. Will keep the hunt on though as it may end up being the only option!

I'd rather not get it reamped to be honest as I'd rather do it myself. I treat every recording session as a chance to experiment, learn and generally better myself as an engineer. Thanks for the suggestion though.

Nah, I totally understand where you're coming from, I just love that expression :D

Hey man i Live in Falkirk, you dont need a mesa or an orange cab, Ive previously owned Orange cab, a vht fat bottom, engl 4x12 and my marshall 1960a still blows them away and i bought that used for under 200!

what you wanna do is make sure you got a good tube head to put through the cab to begin with.

check out ebay, if i were you id fork out the cash and just buy a marshall
1960a or b!

i prefer the sound of the g12 speakers to celestion v30s anyways :headbang:

The guitar tone on your demo is 6505 (green channel) through a 1960a
Ed Sokolowski re amped it for us, he is cutting about this forum somewhere lol

have you actually thought about just getting someone to re amp them?
im sure someone with decent gear would do that for you for £100 no problem, maybe even free of charge.

Hey man, Thats one of the better tones I've heard from a 75T speaker, I've used Marshall cabs plenty of times but its just not a sound I like to be honest, way too scooped and fizzy, I much prefer a V30.

I've no doubt I could get someone of the forum to reamp for me but as I've said previously I'd rather do it myself and learn from it. I'll never get better at recording guitars if I just get someone else to do it for me.

yeah but what kind of head were you feeding through the cab?

6505 and a 1960 cab is a good combo believe me. stick a
ibanez ts9 infront of that actually lol

also were the speakers broken in properly? too many times people complain about fizzy speakers when most of the time the cabs there playing havent been broken in yet.

also keeping in mind fizz can aslo be sorted with some decent eq work afterwards

settings on your head aswell all contribute, theres alot of factors to consider but personally i dont believe the g12 to be a fizzy speaker.

Have used a Marshall DSL, Peavey Valveking and Peavey XXX in my Marshall 2x12" pretty extensively back when it had G12's in it which had a decent amount of hours at gig volume. Using a TS7 in front of them and always keeping the gain on the amp as low as I can possibly get away with. Eventually changed over to V30's and have been way happier ever since.

Just find that mic'd up the 2x12" doesnt have the grunt in the low end that you get from a good 4x12" (I agree with what Metaltastic has posted on the boards that a 2x12" cab just doesnt seem to cut it for heavy guitar tones) Really saves my back for gigging though :)

And I'll add to that by saying I've even heard better recorded stuff from 1x12's than 2x12's! And yeah, V30s definitely for the win

Its really a weird one huh? I remember thinking the guy on youtube with the Krank Rev Jr playing the Sixth style stuff had a pretty beefy tone out of a 1x12"

2x12"s just always seem to sound quite small to me. I can see how it might work for styles that require a more tidy, direct sound. Maybe a Orange 2x12" could be the answer? Those cabs have huge amounts of bass!

orange 2x12s are FIZZZZZZZY!
got rid of mines ages ago swapped it for an orange 4x12 which
sounded way better (still got rid of that to though lol)

I actually regret getting rid of my engl with the v30s
that cabs was defo a winner.

what about using impulses man you might get away with
using them instead no? iv'e heard some decent results on here.
they always sound great using my peavey 6505 fx out stright into an
impulse, just a suggestion maybe not the one your looking for thoug

Fair point about the impulses, though again I'd rather mic a cab myself as I'm treating the whole thing as a learning experience.

Got another thread going the now about decent V30 cabs on a budget so I think I'm gonna end up buying something and selling it on afterwards. Line 6 Spider Valve cab seems to be getting alot of support.

Though if there's still someone out there with a V30 cab to loan then I'd be majorly gratefull!

good to see you posting again round here rene!

a 1960 may not be what you are after necessarily, but they are perfectly usable IMO, and you may just need to tweak the amp and mic a little differently to what you would do with a v30 cab. not saying you should use one, but if one is available it may be worth a go.

some of my favourite tones have been with a g12t75, but then more of them have been v30's. good luck!
