I've been meaning to make some kind of screaming tutorial for you guys, granted 2:30AM EST is not the best time to scream at all, especially with a full day of talking beforehand. Oh well, it's here, it's queer, get used to it.

I used MySpace Karaoke to record this little thing, so just a little bit of echo and no compression or anything. It's a good example of what not to do actually. I haven't screamed in weeks and I went all out on this little ditty. In the middle of the song, I tried to drink some pop to help me out and I ended up just gurgling a bit on the song and laughing. Oh well.

I really wanted to throw this out, and say, if anyone has suggestions as for what would help with a screaming video I could put on youtube or whatever that could help out, let me know what you think I should do. You get to hear a lot of my faults in this karaoke but faults usually help you hear how something is being done... hahah. ?

HERE's another one - http://ksolo.myspace.com/actions/showSongProfile.do?rid=195596&sid=25700&uid=2681396

As you can hear, I lose it after a while... this is due to low stamina I would guess.

We apologize, but this content is not licensed in your region,

fuck

Funny, but that sounds like laryngitis. You're probably having 'stamina' problems because that's about as bad for your throat as extreme vocals can be...

Jeff

Erm, no... not at all. Not only should it not hurt if you plan on doing it for a while, just about every harsh vocalist I've talked to who sounds good and has been at it for a while says that it doesn't hurt. Maybe if you had the most badass voice ever heard, it would be one thing... but I have to be honest - you don't. I can get growls and roars without hurting, as can just about serious every vocalist I've had much time to talk to.

So, if my suspicion is correct and this isn't comfortable, you won't be doing this long or well. I can't honestly say that I think the world will miss much of the 'twelve-year-old-trying-to-sound-like-Dimmu-Borgir-by-squishing-his-throat' sound, but if you really care about your voice then stop and figure out a better way of doing things.

Jeff

I was doing it at 2:30AM after not screaming for months. Give me a break. I thought it was good considering I just jumped into it.

I'm trying to be the wake-up call that you'll wish you had a few years down the road, that's all. This will not be good for you. Nothing more.

Jeff

Just be careful with your voice and throat my friend, you will need it the rest of your life;
if it hurts or gets less powerful after a few takes, there are bound to be some complications..
Best advice is to work on your technique and make sure you can do growls without any effort/pain. You will notice the sound of your growls and screams improving with experience.

good luck! remember, you are not being bashed; this is just some advice!

It doesn't hurt at all, I just need to figure out how to do it more effortlessly... It's like the throat gets really tense after a while and just starts sounding like "popeye" sound. :(

If the throat is getting tense, there's something wrong... no other way around it. How's your breath support? How do you actually get the 'grit' there?

Jeff

I usually get the grit by pushing from the gut and using the throat... I could hold one out for 30 seconds, it's just a matter of if I scream too much without stopping, it'll get messed up. :)

I usually don't do full songs, just like a verse at a time when recording a song. :p

Well we'll all be nuclear waste in 4 or 5 years anyway, and I bet it will last that long or longer even if I do rough popeye vocals. You dig? :)

Honestly guys, the real translation is, I don't expect life to go on much longer than 4 or 5 years. I never talk anyway so if I lose my speaking voice, that's not a huge loss for me. But if I thought I was hurting myself, I wouldn't do it. One of these days I'll post a better clip and you'll hear that I was just under the weather at the time I was recording that MySpace karaoke stuff. :(

Well, that's roughly equivalent to the previous translation (with a small change due to age) but replacing "cannot speak" with "am not alive" - you're not exactly gaining ground, are you? Do you have terminal cancer of the everything? Perhaps you're violently allergic to the year 2013? I'm missing a step here.
