Self-teaching guitar

Hi, can anyone give me any tips on where I should start for learning guitar? I figured a teacher is too expensive right now, and the basics should be simple; at any rate I have a close friend and neighbor that knows how to play decently, so any tips would be loved.

I would just pick up some lesson books and start going through them from the begining. They should tell you everything you need to know.

Yeah, agreed.
In addition with a book, you could try ultimate-guitar.com, in the lessons part, and check out 'The Basics', that taught me a lot (even though I've been playing for almost a year).
And I don't know about everyone else, but you should try learning chords first. Thats what my teacher always did, plus my friends teachers.
