Seriously stuck with this drum mix! Need some fresh ears and opinions

I dig it.. A little over compressed, but I liek the general tone of them.

I'd humanize the cymbals a bit more though and brighten up the kick a little.

Thanks a lot dude, I'm laying off the compression a little right now! I know what you mean and got it as soon as you said it haha

Also, I always struggle with cymbals! How would you recommend humanizing them? The velocities are pretty standard and tried to even it out using them. I only have a compressor and hi shelf boost on the cymbals

I suppose the cymbals really aren't too bad, I bet they'd mix in pretty well with actual music. I'm interested in hearing these with other instruments laid over top.

Me too man! I'm excited to get it done. Hopefully starting guitars on Thursday. Not sure which way to track though.

A) Get guitars AND bass done together for each song
B) Get guitars done for every song THEN track bass after

The kick and snare sound overcompressed. You could get more tone out of the toms, I think, and the snare has too much 'verb on it. I have this exact cymbal sample pack and it LOVES compression and mid scooping.

Help me out then bro! How should I go about getting more tone out the toms?

The emerald cymbal pack? if so then, yeh, its awesome! Are you compressing them a lot? I got a ratio of 4:1, threshold of around 20-25 (cant remember right now), attack of around 5ms and release of around 80ms. Got an eq with a hi shelf boost around 8k and thats about it

It sounds like the toms need more compression and some EQing. Usually I compress to taste and pull out some 100 hz and mess with everything else to taste. The emerald pack is pretty sweet. Right now my compression is this: attack - 6/release - 4000/6:1 ratio/-30dB thresh. I've got a +10dB boost around 10-20k, about a +5dB boost around the 2khz, and some -5dB pulled out of the 500hz and 1khz. You could try those settings but I dunno if it'll fit with whatever else you're doing, and my compressors and your compressors could work really differently.

Thanks mate, I'll give it a try just for the sake of trying although I'm pretty happy with how they've turned out anyway. Im usually boosting around 100 depending on the size of the tom, just to get that low rumble but I'm not sure if its effecting the whole tone or not. I struggle with compressing toms quite a bit, they never turn out 100% to my liking. Reverb does help a lot with toms though. I usually process toms with the reverb send on but I'm not actually doign any EQing to the verb. Should try it really!

put the drums in context

Do you mean put them in context with the band/music? I mean the drummer is happy with how its sounding, but I'm the kinda guy that wont settle for simply "meh they're happy with a half arsed attempt". I really wanna nail each element of the drums on the head before continuing with the rest of the track and make the band even happier with the sound

I need to buy the dream snare. You might also want to try a TINY bit of reverb on the cymbals to help them fill out the right space. Good work so far man.

Dream snare comes with the metal and more pack (I think) for SSD. Ill try some reverb too. Seth from the forum also suggested some multi band compression on the toms too

WAY too much reverb on that snare... unless you're doing a new Killer Dwarfs album ;D
