Seriously, bands should have to submit an application to some sort of organization and perform a live audition before being allowed to ask some unfortunate bastard to track them.

No amount of punching in can make up for a complete lack of the ability to play in time and with dynamic consistency.

One way to discourage lesser talented people from wasting your time by recording them would be to walk them through a price list for different sorts of corrections you'd have to make to their performance in order to attempt putting out a decent e.p. or album. I can only think of 2 ways, logically, it would go and they're both win-win. 1) They decide they aren't ready to record or go elsewhere... or 2) They have loads of money to spend for someone to make them sound better than they are, hence you are compensated extra for your time.
