i'm thinking of getting seymour duncan distortion/jazz pups in my peavey rotor (which has a nice big mahogany body)

Get two very different guitars, put the same pickups on them. They'll sound Different. I guess its a matter of preference though.

yeah but you can counter effects of wood by choosing a pickup suited for the tone you're after as applied to the wood you have.

Its not like I'm going to be as particular as Erik here. I know fuck all about recording, all I do is record tapes of myself jamming through 1 mic. I would like to get some of that shit up and get some opinions on it. I guess my easiest option is to record the tape playing through a computer mic?

I spent $1500 on a Jackson RR1T. Its an amazing guitar. but its not worth it. just spend like 500 or so

up til somewhere around $500 you really get what you pay for, above that the improvements are marginal while the dollars race away really fast

my dollars race away really fast one way or the other, putting $1700 of them into a guitar is really just diverting them from things that aren't going to give me as much long term use and enjoyment. plus, you can always make more money. i'm not going to let that shit prevent me from getting what i want.
