You need the in-line pre. It's doesn't provide amplification to the signal like a regular preamp that you are used to working with.. it converts shure's Mini-XLR beta connector to XLR.. you can't connect it to an external preamp without the in-line pre.. I don't believe phantom power will be provided properly if you use an adapter

Yeah, it contains the components that would normally be housed in the body of the microphone.
