How many people know about this guy Justin King? He's one of the most ridiculous guitarists i've ever seen. Just go to his website www.justinking.com or search for him on video.google.com and watch the first video. Don't be fooled by the cheesy song on his website that streams, go to the media section and find a video of him playing. I don't know why he writes dumb songs, but his actual talent is absurd.

Opeth.

Edit: Make fun of his songs, cuz i do too. But witness this: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-6173219744108377374&q=justin+king

Oh, Nevermind.

- what the fuck man you can't justify your post just by adding the band's name in it!

@Tubbs: General music discussion is allowed here.

His skill is quite impressive. I think I've seen one or two odd people who play in that style. It's kind of like a compromise between standard and chapman-stick style. Not a big fan of the 'we wanna be Cold' style of music, but the bassist plays a Marcus Miller Sig, so there's some respect there.

Not to take anything away from his technique, but he really just sounds like a higher pitched Victor Wooten, or maybe an uninspired Reggie Wooten. Well except for the little percussion taps he does on the body, but, meh. His songwriting kinda sucks balls though, that one that streams on the website... lol.

@Moonlapse: You, or someone with power, deleted a thread that I started.
The subject was Waterclime. That's music.

...?

I see. Well if people preffer that we take back the courtesy of stretching the bounds of conversation on here, that's fine. We can very easily go back to being 100% Opeth, and enforcing it.

@Braighs: I don't know what happened to your thread. I haven't been here very often the last few days. I didn't touch it though.

EDIT: I just checked up on your thread. It turns out that it was deleted by Opeth.com. She sort of took over in my absence in the last few days and it stands to reason that her, being the one who set out the concrete rules on this forum, doesn't appreciate any chatter outside of Opeth.

I've been a bit more flexible while here because I don't see the wider music discussion harming anything. So, whilst I don't touch those threads, you might find every now and then they disappear because someone else feels differently.

I'm pretty sure we can discuss whatever we want anyways. Considering mikael said "let's keep the prog talk going" instead of stupid polls. Many inconsistancies on this board.

I agree, I'm sorry about that. There's been quite a few inconsistencies in the Opeth camp with the management sometimes clashing with the band's wishes and vice versa.

To clear up, my direct instructions are pretty much to keep the chatter 100% about Opeth, regardless of what Mike has said, becuase I don't keep in touch with Mike directly. I've sort of bent the stated rules to include all kinds of music chat as well as Opeth, because I feel it gets boring otherwise.

Having said that, you may still get the ocassional thread closed as per Opeth.com's wishes etc.

The operatative word here is "Courtesy"... The fact is, we are walking the line so to speak by extending said courtesy in the first place. Let's be as clear as possible. The Rules

We have allowed what we feel has been enough general music discussion to supplant the boredom of narrow topical guidelines. We all love and appreciate quality music and that's why we love Opeth. Opeth is comprised of 5 music lovers. The Ålmighty himself seems to have seen some value in and even contributed to threads not entirely Opeth related. That being said, the rules stand and are applied with consistency with the exception of the "General Music Discussion" expansion courtesy.

Clear?

i think its great that we are allowed to have general music discussion here. i understand why rules must be implemented. there are the spammers, attention whores, bandwidth issues (i think...i don't know how that works, but i think i have a general idea), etc...but, although its not right to make assumptions...i think we can all agree that we all love to talk music, inluding the band and the people who run this website...its nice to have a forum where like-minded people (opeth fans) can come talk about whatever...and have a friggin band member post here. this is a pretty cool place. that may sound cheesy...but, if it wasn't true, all of you pathetic geeky regulars wouldn't be checking this place regularly...you fucking mods would be doing something better with your time. okay...i'm gonna go drink some more.

i think this is one of the funniest headlines i have ever heard. this guy is fucking metal. (blabbermouth)

MOTÖRHEAD's LEMMY Talks About Legalizing Heroin, Internet Rumors And Using Viagra - Feb. 4, 2006

All these guitarists trying to do this need to just stop. michael Hedges did it because it gave him new songwriting capabilities, not because it was a cool showoff technique. Plus that was over 20 years ago. I dislike guys who took what he did and turned it into a show instead of an extension of how to write songs on a single acoustic.

See, i love michael hedges and i love what he did, but i dont think that justin is doing it for that. it's a legitamate technique to play guitar like that. You can't just say its a michael hedges thing. Granted, he may well have been influenced by hedges, but to discredit his writing and style because hedges created and perfected the technique years ago is just foolish. I think this guy has a style all his own. Hedges was much more spiritual in his playing. King attacks the guitar. He has a very uptempo, melodic feel to it. WHereas hedges took the harmonic and spirtual route to playing tap and fingerstyle.
