Silly Libertarians...

Is the author a Libertarian or something? Because it sounds like you are implying that Libertarians are all like the author, which is definitely not the case.... I'm a Libertarian, and I think the guys thoughts in the article are quite ridiculous...

Just saying.

The Ludwig von Mises Institute is founded on free-market ideology of the Austrian variety, and subscribes to militant capitalism, Rothbard, Milton Friedman, etc. Libertarians are basically the only people who read the site.

I'm not implying all Libertarians subscribe to this ideology; Libertarianism is after all a broad category.

I think this article is a good example of what's wrong with militant free-market capitalism though. Essentially these guys put the market above humanity, and I have a big problem with that.

Agreed, this was always my understanding of libertarianism

I can see where they wanted to go with this, but it was just worded poorly.

I wouldn't call myself a libertarian, but I am pro liberty and as such I do not subscribe to any one political party... I am also all for free markets, unlike what we've had in the last 30+ years.

Anyway... yeah, Poorly worded article.

Essentially these guys put the market above humanity, and I have a big problem with that.

What do you mean by "these guys"?

I love how this article massively understates the amount of oil coming out.

It is now leaking 60,000 bpd as of this morning.

It takes 1 quart of motor oil to make 250,000 gallons of sea water too toxic for living things. This is also considered to be one of the largest oil deposits in the ocean so there is no telling how much will come out of this thing.

Your understanding of libertarianism is very wrong. Libertarianism puts humanity, human rights, and their protection as the #1 priority of government. A free market is a natural extension of this.

If you read the article, you'd see that a Libertarian policy on pollution is that polluters are required to pay 100% of all clean up costs... Which is by far the most sensible thing to do.

Its leaking at 5000 barrels per day. Which is a little over 200000 gallons per day. The 60000 bpd number you heard is a worst case scenario involving the total loss of the wellhead.
