Singing in a Band

I sing. Not in a band, but I'm writing songs. As soon as my bro masters his Les Paul, we'll start a band.

I didn't take singing lessons, but for a metal band, you don't need a very wide vocal range (well not always). Also, singing in the minor key is much easier than in the major key. I don't know if it's the smae for other people, but for me, singing in major is a pain in the ass.

By the way, if you plan on donig death growls too, get your singing down first. Afterwards try death growls, and every now and then take a break and make sure your vocal chords don't get ruined.

Pretty much that. If it starts to hurt when you do your death vocals, then stop! I got a major cough from doing my vocals too much about a month and a half ago... then I made the mistake of trying to do them while my throat was messed up... and I am just getting over it now. This cough sucks, trust me.

There are a couple of threads on grolws too, if you want to read them, but I think Lethe put it best in saying "Just don't try to copy other people's styles" and you'll do fine with those.

As far as singing, a lot of the Opeth stuff isn't that complex. Harvest is nice, but for starters I recommend almost anything of Damnation.

also if you're still in school.... join your school's choir!

i know this may sound silly but your choir teacher will teach you how to use your diaphraghm [sp?] and your stomach to sing instead of your vocal chords, right now a girl in the choir is helping me... she can growl and i can't! its truely sad...

anyway, if you dont want to join then ask the choir teacher if she could give you some pointers...
