I watched a Rodrigo y Gabriella video tonight where they were sharing some of their playing techniques. Gabriella showed how she does her slapping technique which u can see here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TcE3NgV2Tyg.

I'm just wondering if anyone has any experience with this and knows 1) Do you get used to the strings hitting the skin below your nail (owww painful!!) or practice not to do this??....... and 2) if I practice heaps will it eat through my nails :p ??

That's called rasquedo (sp?) technique and is a combination of slapping and strumming and is of flamenco origin... Awesome stuff, but murder on the wrists... I can only do it a tiny bit and can't really keep any sort of beat going...

Technically, it's actually a combination of Rasgueado and Golpe (not sure about the spelling on the last one:erk:). Rasgueado being the strums and the Golpe being the percussive taps on the face of the guitar. I know there's a "proper" term for slapping too, but I can't remember it at the moment. I want to say it's "tambour" but I'm not 100% positive so I'll get back to you on that. A lot of the pieces that use slapping that I've seen just say "slapping" in the music. Those have also all been modern pieces though. If you wanna hear a really kickass modern composition for classical guitar that uses extensive slapping, check out "saudade #3" by Roland Dyens.

^I'm with PMP on the subject though, that stuff can be br00tal. I love listening to flamenco but I don't foresee anytime in the near future where I'd have nearly enough time to try to attempt flamenco stuff and manage to do it justice

ah, I just assumed there was because that's what the thread was called and that's what you seemed to be asking about. I only watched up until about 30 seconds into her showing her examples.

Holy weepin Uks, I bet he doesnt need to clip that right right hand index and thumb nails.
