Hey there everyone, I've been working on a cover of my favorite Slayer song!

I'm looking for some opinions and help to see if I'm headed in the right direction with the overall sound of it so far. There's no vocals or guitar solos as yet.

I haven't had very much experience in mixing so far, but I'm working towards doing my own "one man band" CD of about 5 or 6 originals and a couple of covers. Hence lots of time and money spent on software/equipment and hours reading on this forum! Ha ha!

Drums are DFHS, guitars are my BC Rich 7-String (with a JB7 pickup) into Amplitube 2 via a Firepod on JCM 800 model with some Kerry King setttings I noted from an Interview on the web somewhere (mids around 7!) and then to Revalver MKII RIR with a GuitarHack Fredman impulse on there. Quadtracked, 2 x 100% left and right and 2 x 80% left and right.

The playing could be tighter though!!

Bass direct into the Firepod too, then re-amped via Amplitube 1 (if you can call it that).

I used URS Strip on the drum buss and the Sneap C4 preset on the guitar buss. Sonic TimeWorks Mastering Compressor (clipper) on the overall mix for a bit of competition in the LOUDNESS WAR. I also used Reneisance Comp on the snare.

I think that's about it..?

PS does anybody know if Slayer actually do quad tracking on the guitars? I LOVE the sound they get on Christ Illusion. And the overall mix too.

Cheers for reading/listening. :headbang:

Sounds cool, how did you do the drum fills. They sound kick ass

Cheers!

I did them all via Midi programming within Cubase SX3...

...and lots of close watching Dave Lombardo on live performances of the song helped.

He changes them a bit though when playing live so I listened to the original album performance more closely and did my best to copy that.

Kinda tapped them out with my fingers on my desk too (does anyone else do that?) to kinda get a feel for it and see which are the heavier velocity hits.

The guitars are very loud compared to the rest of the mix, I would adjust those a little.

I'll get on the case tonight after work (if I have time) and re-post the updated mix with guitars lowered a bit.

As a guitarist predominantly all my mixes do tend to be a bit "guitar heavy" he he!

That's pretty sick, I'd like to hear it with the guitars lowered like others have mentioned, just to see if that killer guitar tone still keeps its punch.

I haven't heard this song in ages. It feels so good to hear it again and you did a good job with it.
The gtrs sound absolutely great. Crisp, clear and punchy.
The vocals and solo are good too though the solo could be tighter.
Needs more bass.
While the snare still sounds good and could be passable, it tends to sound a little fake to me, perhaps over processed?
The ride sounds to light/weak also imo. Over all, the mix and everything is very good. :kickass:

Haha i do that too :) Even for not drum-programming purposes ! I'm a champo for belly Or desk finger drumming :) Thanks to years of boredom at school.

Anyway about your song i think it's killer. I dig the guitar sound. Very ballsy. The overall production has this early Slayer "natural" feel that i like. I'd like more "pissed-off" vocals but that's just a matter of taste.

Honestly there's nothing else to complain about here.

EDIT (after reading Radd's post) :

-for me snare is quite ok...does not sound fake/processed to me.
-i agree the ride could be a bit louder.
-i also agree there should be a tad more bas in there.
-i definitely agree on how the guitar sound rules : Crisp, clear and punchy. Those qualities are what i'm after when recording my own guitar parts (but with the ENGL sound instead of the Marshall sound)

Hey thanks for the cool feedback guys!

I still haven't quite got the guitar tone to exactly where I wanna be with it yet. I'm kinda happy with it. A bit more practice with the impulses should hopefully sort that out.

On another note... I'm actually REALLY upset at the moment about something else too.

I just loaded up my project and the drum MIDI track seems to have literally VANISHED. I was going to re-bounce with some adjustments to the ride cymbal and with a few more drum rolls in there.

Has anyone else experienced this phenomenon? Perhaps it disappeared when I exported the final mix? Or maybe i cleared it when I removed unused media or old muted tracks?

Is there a way I can get it back?

I understand Cubase clears its undo history of changes to the project file when you open and close it... Does it save the midi tracks within the project file?

The whole "self-produced-home-recording" thing really gets me sometimes - it's like you learn loads in a day and then you get a setback by something as silly as this.

Damn it!

It took me ages to program the f*cking drum MIDI!!! AAAARRRGH:mad:

I love that tune and you definitely nailed it! The mix sounds great too... good luck recovering the midi track for the drums.

I recorded my own version of "Altar of Sacrifice/Jesus Saves" about two years ago with live drums. I'm feeling inspired now to dig it up and remix it! LOL

Cheers!

Ok, I've had another crack at this song (for my "solo" project Morti Viventi). All recorded on my Firepod.

Re-recorded the guitar tracks, although the DI's are still recorded a bit too hot I think. 3 performances per-side, used Amplitube 2, Marshall JCM 900, Overscream pedal with different amount of mids on each track panned 100, 90 and 85 left & right the guitars panned further in were a few decibels lower than the 100% panned ones. All run through Boogex using Guitarhack's impulses (the Sneap one.)

Drums are still the original DFHS audio tracks as I couldn't be bothered to re-do all the midi again! I used parallel compression as per Daunt's guide. Waves Rcomp and Waves EQ.

Bass (re-recorded) is DI through Boogex with Ampeg impulses with Rcomp and Voxengo Elephant.

Vocals are just me (re-recorded) into my SM57 with pop shield in front. Double tracked the lead vocal. Renaissance Verb on the vocal buss.

Lead guitars (re-recorded) were Amplitube 2 with a little Cubase Double Delay plugin.

On the master buss I have Tessla SE > SSL Comp > Gclip > Gclip > Voxengo Elephant.

I referred to Daunt's extreme master buss guide and tried to mix everything through the comp and then referred to the Getting Your Loudness thread.

Please leave me some comments/feedback/advice!

P.S. Go easy on me! I'm still relatively new to all this

Man this is just... AWESOME ! :)

I didn't A/B-ed it with the older version (which i loved btw) but this new one is just badass, especially the guitars of course.

Congratulations.

Thanks for the compliments dude, really appreciate that!

I personally wouldn't have 6-tracked the guitars but that's purely personal taste. everything else is killer!

Thanks man! I dunno why I track guitars so many times, maybe it's because I read somewhere that Hetfield does... Wait a minute, this is aint a Metallica song... I like the sound of tightly tracked performances.

yeah, cool. the vocals sound like peavy from rage.

Funny you should say that actually dude 'cos one of my buddies said that to me too! RAGE rule!

+1 even if it sounds great (you must be very tight cuz' it doesn't sound like the usual quad-tracking mess).

I play the riffs over and over again until it all sounds like one big fat performance. I listen to the DI's to ensure it is all nice and tight. Kinda sounds like a nice chorus when you hear that many tight clean DI's together. When u slip out of time it goes kinda delay sounding or phasey - it's hard to describe.

Thanks everyone! It's all work in progress though still, as soon as I get some of my own songs finished I'll upload those too for a listen and some feedback.

CHEERS :headbang:

Fuck dude! That sounds awesome. Very impressive in both performance, drum programming and mixing! It sure doesn't sound like beginner to me!
Congrats...

Cheers dude!

P.s. Thanks to all on the forum actually, I've read and learnt tons on here. Especially Daunt's Faderwear guides which I would be screwed without.

THRASH 'TIL THE END!
