strange thing.. got a 57 from a friend and tried the two 2m57 technique.
but hey, they sound completly different, his one is black and mine is metalic. mine has more level with the same gain, and mine is much brighter...

Is one of them broken? is one of them fake? listen to this clip, both of them placed at the exact same place (where the cone meets the dust cap) with same preamp. mine lacks of bass and is really bright, the other one has too much bassed andf a bit muddy.

what the $$$??

edit: many of the outer detail on my mic is suggesting that it is a fake. and also its electrical impedance. its 580 ohms and not 400 typical.
but dont you feel its crisper? though it is harsh and sounds strange?

Unscrew the 57 body from the head, if the wires are red and black its a fake, yellow and green wire is what shure use.

That's prob the easiest tell tale sign of a fake, Do that and report back....

they are both red... :erk:

Try turn the plastic capsule....if it turnes with no problem it's original....if it turnes with some problem...it's a fake. I bought a fake 57 and turning the black plastic I broke the wires inside

i have unidyne that i never use because it's too bright/nasal

Fake SM57 (or 58) usually does not have output transformers. So, if you have multimeter, you can measure DC resistance, should be 17-18 Ohm between pins 2 and 3 and no contact (infinite resistance) between pairs with pin 1 (ground). Fake ones usually have something around 590 Ohms between pins 1 (ground) and 2 i.e. no transformer. Absence of transformer can be checked visually - transformer placed in handle in some sort of silicone, fake ones can have some shit (like foam) inside where transformer should be.

yea metalic like unidyne. and i mesured 590 ohms. that sucks. too bad it took me 4 years to understand why i cant get any normal recording with an sm57 that everyone likes so much
