SM57 Impedance Gizmo

At the risk of copping abuse over my sloppy testing riffs of the "Gizmo", here are some more anyway:

Gear:

BC Rich Warlock Platinum Pro with EMG81 in Bridge (Tuned E-Flat)
Krank Revolution
THD Hotplate (attenuated quite high at -12 to keep Volume down)
Mesa Traditional 4X12 Rectifier Cabinet (I wrote Standard in my first post, d'oh it is Traditional)
Shure SM57
M-Audio Firewire Solo
Guitar Tracks Pro 3

Krank Settings:
Krank Channel (wanky name for the dirty channel, I know:heh: )
Pres: 5
Sweep: 2
Bass: 8
Mid: 6
Treb: 5
Master 1: 2
Master 2: 0
Gain: 1

Again, I didn't reamp, I played the sample twice so there will be differences to start with. I can hear slightly more pronounced mids and less/smoother highs (although the differences are very very slight). Single tracks as before with no post anything and no sense of timing (hmm a metronome would've been nice):heh:.

Remember, same disclaimer as first samples, they were just quick tests.

Quite possibly, maybe something to try.

What's that Jeff, we can take the transformer out, Just Kidding:lol: . There is a risk of me killing my mic, but might give it a try.

EDIT: OOPS, didn't mean to post those samples (now this is embarassing), these samples are a shitstir for a mate as to how we used to play ACDC when we first learnt it. Hmm. Think I will Delete it and never return to the board, LOL.

Guy, if you kill the 57 taking out the transformer, make sure you have parental supervision when you take a shit just so you don't lose the intestines.

Okay, so, I found out that my firepod's pres are 1.3k, so I'm thinking about making a load cable for my 57. Now, can I make the cable and put it in line with another cable for the desired effect? Say...

Source > 57 > Cable > Load Cable > Preamp?

Thanks!

hmmm..... so the proper resistor for an sm57 into a Firepod is 450 ohm???

And....what about doing a DIY subkick? What would the value resistor be for an 8ohm speaker into a Firepod?:Saint:

:zombie: RESURRECTED!!! Hwahaha! :kickass:

I really don't like the way my SM57 sounds going into my Allen&Heath board with it's 2kohm pres. Thats seems pretty high anyway for such an otherwise great sounding board. I'm thinking of either making one of these gizmo cables or removing the transformer from my 57 like JBroll was talking about. Since this thread is so old I was wondering if anyone else has had additional experience with either of these methods. The transformer removal seems more simple, as you just take it out and be done with it, but it also just seems so final, and I only have one sm57 to play with.

With the gizmo, how exact do you have to be with the resistor type? It seems like with so many different pres out there with their different loads or whatever, there are many formulas that would work and basically any added resistance would be a slight improvement. Or am I missing some sort of math thing that is way over my head?

The 57 removal doesn't have to be 'permanent' - if you leave the wires attached to the transformer (and mark off where they went!) you can solder it in the middle of a cable and have an instant-transformerizing patch.

Sold!

I think I'm gonna try it. At this point on my guitar cab my 57 only really seems useful as a compliment to my i5. By itself it sounds just stupid and nasally, honestly. IME so far anyway.

slightly off topic, but seeing as sm58s have exactly the same capsule as sm57s, if i take the pop shield off my 58 i actually have a 57? or is some of the electronics different?

The link in post 1 just loads a blank page

however I do seem to recall something like this in Recording Magazine. I can scan if you want.

I've got 5 57 clones here, no real 57s so I'm gonna try removing the transformer from 1 today.

It might be interesting to make a little box with a pot in it to change the resistance/impedance. The impedance of my PF2626 is 3.7k ohms. So something from 150 Ohms to 2.5K Ohms would be cool.

I don't know if it's exactly like a 57, it is widely regarded as the same mic with a pop filter.

Try it out, you won't break anything, record a clip with and without the filter.

with the filter you'll likely hear it more muffled with a slightly metallic overtone.

I have done, although i dont have a 57 to compare with. It does work pretty well, i just wanted to know technically what i was doing........my good friend wikipedia says the capsule is the same so mmmmm

Jbroll, removing the transistor in a 58? worth trying?

Can't say, I don't have one. Worst-case-scenario it's a reversible process (provided you don't fuck it all up and explode the universe), give it a shot...
