What's my next step? I put a lot of time into it and really don't want to re-record/mix the whole thing.

Try every avenue possible to recover the data. If it's totally gone then you don't really have a choice but to re-do everything from scratch :\ Always good to have redundant copies of your files. Lately I have been doing a copy on two diff hard drives and then a DVD if I *really* don't want to deal with something getting lost.

EDIT: late to the thread, but same shit everyone else said

If it's an external Hd, make sure it's not the enclosures power supply that fried. If that's the case you can put the drive in another enclosure or just mount it internally. Might be best to take to local shop that can give you some help and advice.

Thanks for the advice guys. In my 14 years of owning a computer, I have NEVER had a harddrive crash on me. It has just never occured to me that I would ever need to backup anything, then right after the EP is nearly done, bam. Perfect timing eh?

I'm typing this from my PS3, thank god it detects USB keyboards, lol.
BTW, when I turn on my computer my harddrive clicks every two seconds, sounds like the head is busted.

You got pretty lucky i'd say, in my 15 years of using PC's i killed at least 3 and had a few more die on me.

I recommend a Raid5 consisting of 4 or more quality disks and the most-quality powersupply you can find. The raid5 does give a great compromise of security and speed (you have the speed of 3 harddisks and it can take the failure of a random disk, the chance of 2 disks crapping out at the same time is only given with outer influences like powerfluctuations, this is what the kickass powersupply is for!).

And a script which zips your active project-directory and then uploads it to some internet-server and then shuts the PC down, so everytime you leave studio, just execute it and sleep sound!.

I suggest you boot Linux from a DVD or a USB device and then use the NTFS driver in Linux to mount the hard drive. If it mounts OK then it is likely recoverable. If the hard drive does not spin up to speed on power up then you are screwed.

Note to everyone : The era of moving parts hard drives is OVER, get a solid state drive and enjoy the reliability, low heat disipation and extraordinary speed.

But the time of dirt-cheap spinning drives for building a ridicioulously fast and secure NAS has just begun :)

I had a whole computer take a poop on me before. I successfully took out the hard drive and put it in one of those external hard drive enclosures and hooked it up through a usb port to my new computer and it worked fine.

Every so often I backup my files on one of those hard drive storage books too.

Backing files up is really important. I have trophy pictures of bitches I have fucked and really don't want to lose them.

But seriously, this happened to me once and I lost an EP for a band that I had been recording for a few days. Understandably I've been a backup fanatic ever since. I have a removable 2 TB drive that I back up everything to every night.

This happened to me on a university project I was working on, had to re track the whole thing, now I have an external harddrive in my house that never moves. Then I have a travelling harddrive, which I back up everytime I do something important (recording, research, assignment s, etc) then I have a USB stick that I put all the stuff I carnt afford to lose that is in its box under my bed!

Hard disk drive on the fridge!! Nothing to lose if you try it as a final step, have fun!

DONT FUCKING DO IT.
Its the dumbest shit i have ever heard.

I just got my own drive back from data recovery(Went for about 400usd + new drive), and i talked to the guy who worked there(Im a huge computer nerd.).
I talked about all the stupid shit about this stuff, and when the freezer thing came up he just shaked his head.
He had a drive in once where they had tried this trick, they ended up destroying about 50% of the data.. if they hadn't done it he was fairly sure it would have been a 100% recovery.

Its usually free/very cheap to send your drive to a company to check the drive for errors.. then you get to know how much it would cost to fix it.

You've been too lucky.
14 years and no crash??
If you're on mac try diskwarrior, saved my ass two times.
since I don't trust these programs, first time I just torrented the program, when I saw what it did I paid for the software right away.
It's an incredible tool
