so the "best of the year" lists are starting to roll out

Nobody will put this on any list, but I am adding Joanna Newsom's "Ys" to my best-of-2k6. The album is five long, intricate, brilliant tracks that are completely radio-unfriendly and hard to penetrate. As a Kayo Dot listener, obviously, none of that shit matters to me.

meh.

it's not that great.

3/5

the Newsom voice-haters are kind of like the people whose genetic flaw makes coriander leaves taste like soap. unfortunate!

I like the Witch album. and fuck I need to listen to Negativa before the year is out!

The "Witch" record is good, "seer" is a top song for 06 for me.

I just think Asa Irons solo stuff(with Swann Miller) and with his band, Feathers are a bit more consistently kickass in a "live-in-a-forest-with-only-the-heat-of-a-stone-stove-to-keep-you-warm" kind of way.

I'm trying to compile my own full list and having trouble because there's a lot of really solid stuff that came out in 2006, much of it isn't truly "top 10" material. good, but not great y'know?

I hope Celtic Frost at least make your list, avi. I think it's their best so far, which is really an odd thing to happen from a reunion. Same with Confessor last year.

I am kind of confused about Celtic Frost, a friend whose taste I really respect went to see them a month ago and said it was one of best show of the year and I couldn't even imagine that happening. Now you say that the album is great too.... I have to hear that thing...

I was very skeptical as well. I dislike the reunion craze as much as anyone usually. And indeed, having seen the recent Frost live too, I have to Subordinate to the Domination.

I am not a teenage Frost fan, I didn't understand nor care for their early albums until much later, so it's not the ravings of a fanatic either.

It's weird how much attention Agalloch is getting lately. They're pretty good, but they never play in town ever. I like watching their video and looking at their promo photos and seeing different places in Portland and around Oregon and stuff.

Top 10:
Tool - 10,000 Days
!T.O.O.H.! - Rad a Trest
Canvas Solaris - Penumbra Diffuse
Mirrorthrone - Carriers of Dust
The Mars Volta - Amputechture
Wolfshade - Evening Star
Gory Blister - Skymorphosis
Darkthrone - The Cult is Alive
Om - Conference of the Birds
Six Organs of Admittance - The Sun Awakens

I don't really see how Agalloch is getting so much praise. Ashes is a boring as hell album aside from 2 excellent songs (Falling Snow and Not Unlike the Waves) and Pale Folklore, The Mantle, and even their EPs are much better. I like how Pitchfork is suddenly a metal authority too :/
