I do. No serious gain reduction at the begining, but near the end of my mix I squash it to see how it reacts and change things accordingly.

wait, wait, a limiter? or a bus compressor.

if your using a limiter to see how things might sound louder or just to get the levels louder, u really need to calibrate your monitoring levels, like for me, my monitors are calibrated at -85db SPL with a -20dbfs signal.

It's not an issue of volume in the room, it's and issue of, is my snare drum going to disappear when I, or someone else goes to master this?

I don't see this as a "do" or "don't" issue since it's so easy to bypass a limiter or any other plugin. I always keep a limiter on the master buss and periodically switch it on or off depending on what I'm doing.

I don't mix with a limiter, but I do occasionally have 2/3 dB compression on the master.

What is the Waves L2 exactly? That's what I use on the master bus. I set the threshold then play through the whole song and make sure it is never doing more than 3-4dB of reduction. I like how it changes the sound of everything, I don't doubt there is a better way of doing things, but I haven't figured it out for myself yet.
