Some FATES WARING appreciation

It was a joke. Because around this time last year, you were posting the same types of threads about Savatage, and now you are in a Savatage cover band, hahaha. Just "ribbing you" as you put it :)

Gotcha. It's all good dude..
The difference between Savatage and FW for me though is that I have always been a fan of Sirens through HOTMK. It was last year when I dove deeper into their catalog.

Joining the band though has been rewarding in getting me to explore the rest of the Tage catalog I was not previously familiar with as I have discovered a lot of great material, esp in the post Oliva era.

Jason, it makes no sense to me whatsoever why you're not already a huge fan of the first three albums at least. NOB, TSW, and ATG are traditional metal classics to the hilt! :notworthy

~Brian~

I had all three on vinyl back in the day. As I said before, I hadn't heard those albums in over 20 years. When I got back into metal in the late 90s, FW were not a band I went back to rediscover, primarily as I hadn't really cared too much for the later-era material I had heard.

You know how it is man. Just so many bands out there!

^ This. It's overwhelming to me. Every time I get caught up on some classic band I'd been missing out on, I hear about ten more that i didn't know before.

Yeah, it happens all the time. Just not enough time or money to really be into EVERY band that one might think you should.

Well, that's why I love THIS forum specifically, amongst others, as we all do a good job of sharing band videos of bands that we think each other will like.

Jasonic - I know you and I have not exchanged much verbiage on here before. But I appreciate you posting these two songs and mentioning these two albums.

My favorite era of Fates Warning was when I discovered Awaken the Guardian the week it was released. I remember walking into the mall record store - yes, just before cds were being sold mass market - and looking through the Metal Blade display area. The album art of AtG immediately entranced me. And of course being a Dungeons & Dragons player the song titles intrigued me. So without knowing what a single note sounded like, I plunked down the cash (probably $8.99) and bought my first Fates Warning album. I took it home, put it on the turntable, and escaped into an undiscovered world.

I have that one, No Exit, and Perfect Symmetry on Vinyl. I had first-run copies of the first two Arch albums on CD as well (along with AtG) until someone broke into my home about 10+ years ago and stole all 116 of the cds in my apparently easily transportable cd rack. :erk: I've since replaced only TSW and ATG with the reissues. And I still own the aforementioned vinyls, though the latter years FW never grabbed me. Perfect Symmetry was the final FW album for me.

Anyway, back to my point... Fates Warning was a breakthrough band for me, as was Savatage and Sanctuary in the late 80's. I discovered them all within a couple of years of each other. And to this day they ALL remain in rotation because nothing produced in the 'current' metal market comes close to touching the energy and soul put into those early records. There is so much emotion in the song Guardian. Very few current artists have been able to touch my heart the way that song does.

Awaken the Guardian remains in my personal favorite top ten metal albums of all time.

Thanks again for posting this. Hopefully a few of the latter day ProgPower fans will make a startling new discovery with early Fates Warning.

:)

Rider of Theli - Good post!
Yeah, I had Spectre Within and ATG on vinyl back in the day too.
All the early Metal Blade stuff was great.
It never ceases to amaze me how many great relatively unknown US cult metal bands are out there.
I know you guys are probably sick of me blowing smoke about Manilla Road, but they are a prime example.
There are TONS more, and TONS I know I have never heard, even if I know the name.

The other day I broke out A Pleaseant Shade of Gray and played it front to back. What an amazing disc......I forgot how much I loved these guys.
