i'm curious; a lot of their fans on the intarnet tend to be really pretentious and annoying so i would pretty much dismiss them outright but then you have dudes like lizard and nad who are pretty solid, down-to-earth folks who enjoy good music, so that gives me an inkling that there may be something worthwhile there

Choirs of the Eye would probably make my top 5 in 2003 but this new one came like a shock : my favorite album of 2006 so far.

So when is "pretention" because an artist is recording a musical adventure in their head, compared to morons who somehow feel they have to corpsepaint themselves to make them cartoon characters of a pretwnd world of 800 years ago, that will never come back, and is used as an excuse for stupidity...

haha, don't get me wrong here, the pretentious part was directed solely at a few fans and not the band members themselves, who seem very interesting from the blogs, etc. that you've posted in the past. i'm not one of those people who throws the "art-fag" label around carelessly

also to return to the original point of this thread, i forgot to download those songs last week, and i don't have headphones with me today, so...haven't actually listened to them yet

ok, well if these two songs are representative, they're probably not my cup of tea. i guess after a year of hearing how avant-garde and unusual they are, whether from diehard fans or people who hate them, i was expecting something a little weirder.

it's not that it's bad music or anything, it just didn't provoke much of a response. sort of like pink floyd, cool stuff but it just doesn't do anything for me. so i guess you could say i don't "get" these guys, not in terms of lacking the intellectual ability to get it or some bullshit, but it's just not suited to my temperament.

For me the lock broke open as I was spinning "Choir of the Eye" with my mind focused on something else. The music sort of slowly crept its way to the front door of my attention span, much like an elusive scent which grows stronger the longer you're exposed to it.

I just listened like 90 times because I loved maudlin of the Well so much, and figured I was just not "getting" Kayo Dot yet. I was right. Definitely a band you have to spend a lot of time with to enjoy, if you aren't willing to, then eh. But if so, then woo! :dopey:

I haven't entirely warmed up to Dowsing by the way, so far the only song I REALLY enjoy Gemini Becoming the Tripod. The others have gone from "blah" to "hey, sorta nifty" though. Probably another ten listens and I'll be supAr hooked.
