So I was at work today - I work with a few people, including three girls in their early 20s - and the topic of conversation is music. Some current song that I've never heard of.

"I'm so out of touch," I say.

And then one of the girls asks me a question for which I could think of no decent answer:

"Nigel, why do you listen to old music?"

I tried to think of a funny response that Bill Hicks might be proud of (it reminded me of the question he claimed he was asked in a waffle house - "What you readin' for?"), but had nothing. What are you supposed to say to that?

Because it has soul, takes talent, and is way above modern pap. In fact my dear, there is still alot of good music around, you just have to look past your vain fucking surface, and maybe grow a beard.

Run with that tomorrow Spiffo, I won't even make you say that I said it and it is almost a trademark response with some of the fuckwits I have dealt with lately

Usual response is something about electronically distorted voices and music, that can't make their live performances sound even remotely like their albums.

Would like to link to Zakk Wylde's acoustic version of Suicide Messiah, as something that sounds incredibly good, sans a studio and electronic fixings.

We listen to "old" music now for the same reason they will listen to "old" music in 10 years... it takes us to a place that is warm and secure and reminds us of good times past....

and thats why there is so many re-makes of songs nowdays. Cause our "old" music is good and better than the shite nowdays
