Sonar 7

Have it and love it....better midi editing and side-chain are my two fav updates...there is also added work done in the 64-bit enviroment and a bunch of other things.

I'm using it, I upgraded from 5pe to 7pe so I'm getting all the version 6 goodies too, it was a great upgrade.
I'm very happy so far, the MIDI tools are fantastic.

As far as advice....nothing I can think of. Everything has gone without a hitch for me.

What about the Plugins .. ? are they really good or Pro ? coz I read in some post that whatever sequencer (Cubase/Nuendo/Sonar/PT/Logic, etc) is all the same, without important variations.. But What about the plugins that each brand uses huh ?
I think that is a very important issue when you are gonna mastering or tweak channels,.. compression, eqs, effects, all are in teh same pro quality level ?

VST is the same as Directx or Directx is the same as Rtas for ex. ?

Demian.

Does Sonar have any sort of rhythm editing utility like Beat Detective? Is this what that "audio snap" thing is?

Wow, you're in for a hell of an upgrade, Charlie!

I'm loving the sidechaining and Audio Snap is definately improved as well as midi editing. Sonar7PE smokes compared to 6PE on my machine. I'm doing a live show all in one session about 20GB of audio and barely getting 10% usage on all 4 cores.

I could have really used that. I manually sound reinforced kicks and snares for and entire album :zombie:
But hey at least I can say I've done something as insane as that hahaha

Ok I just got Sonar 7. Should I immediately install it or finish recording and install it when its time to mix so I can use the new plugins etc? Does it have anything that warrants me needing it now? I've already finished recording drums and distorted guitars. Does it have smoother punch ins or edits? Or can it wait?

edit: I am using Sonar 2.2 currently

I didn't use Sonar that long ago so I'm not 100% sure. I would say just finish what you're doing in 2.2 and then load the session to mix in Sonar7 once you get done. Also, update it once you install.

I bought Sonar 7 but it kept throwing a shitfit with my particular setup whenever a mix involved more than 30 audio tracks and 20 or so plugs. It had compatibility issues with my UAD cards, Fireface, Control Surface, external FX, etc.....all this from a decent spec purpose-built DAW which runs Steinberg and other audio and video applications without skipping a beat. Without going into the finer details, lets just say I won't be buying another Cakewalk product ever again. If you have a system which relies on external FX or like to use UAD plugs, I can't recommend Sonar. The update patch didn't solve a thing.

I liked some of the new features at first but found it virtually unworkable and went back to Cubase (for my stuff) and Nuendo (for my clients stuff) within a month as my clients couldn't wait for me to bug test CW's software.

You also can't transfer the license as to sell it so it was a move I seriously regret.

So far I've had issues running several tracks and using various plug ins but that could be because I haven't upgraded computer or because the plugins are 64bit.
I'll keep testing. I really need to get used to it it's a little different than 2.2.
