In my opinion HANDS DOWN. WOW! Jesus H. Christ they sounded awesome! I vote for Virgin Steele as second and Pagans Mind as third. But DEFINITELY Sonata at #1. How about you?

I hate to say this as I know these guys from my years growing up on Long Island, but Virgin Steels gets my nomination for worst ever performance at Progpower.
Their setlist was horrible, and the fact that they are now the Milli Vanilli of Metal with triggered basslines.

As far as I know Josh Block was fulfilling his role of bass duties with a 6-string bass guitar.

David often has his keyboards out there when they play, but I'm guessing he wanted to roam the stage more last night.

As for setlist, to each their own. I thought it was a good set list. Were there songs missing that I wanted to hear? Of course. But given only an hour and being a big fan of about 5 hours of their music what is one to do? They played some of my favorites. Invictius, Veni, Vidi, Vici, Symphony of Steele, Kingdom of the Fearless, Defiance, and Bonedust sounded great live.

David sure loves his minor thirds, doesn't he? But honestly, I would have enjoyed it more if he would've kept those to a minimum.

Virgin who?

That band gets the cheesist performance award if there ever was one at PP.

The rest of the lineup last night made up for the lackluster performance of Virgin Steele.

I think their only two fans were there up on the rail with the fake swords. They were pointing them with the handle towards the singer in hopes that he'd take their swords... what a freaking joke!

I agree.. the Milli Vanilli of ProgPower :puke:

Pagan's Mind, on the other hand... :OMG:

I'd have to give Friday night to Pagan's Mind. DAMN they smoked. And this is coming from someone who likes Sonata ARctica BETTER than PM. I'd rank

Pagan's Mind
Sonata ARctica (a VERY close second)
Raintime
Redemption
Communic

Thirding the comments on Virgin Steele. I like to give everyone a chance, but I booked after a song or two of theirs. That definitely wasn't a 6-string bass, it COULD have been a baritone guitar, I suppose, but I didn't think so. I understand issues sometimes prevent people from making it, or whatever, but flown-in bass and keyboards? Karaoke was Wednesday night.

That said, I was expecting big things from Raintime, and they totally whipped my ass. I wasn't all too familiar with Redemption but they put on one hell of a set, Pagan's Mind knocked me to the ground and kicked my corpse around the venue, and Sonata were brilliant. The last time I saw Sonata Tony was really struggling, but his voice sounded flawless last night.

Oh, and the "Old McDonald" was a classic moment in PPUSA history!

SA did that they performed at Jaxx on Wednesday night. Same with the vodka song and the "wave" that Tony did. Probably they're doing the same thing on all their tour stops.

I'm just surprised that Tony knew an old American children's song.

I'll bet you the crowd was bigger and more energetic here though! :)

They were okay. Elisabeth and I were pissed that it took them 35-40 minutes to set up after Pagan's Mind left the stage. That's a long, LOOONNNGGG time to wait after being at the venue from 1:30 onward and feeling dead on one's feet. Granted, I'm not as young as I used to be. But starting a little before midnight kinda put me off to SA Friday night. I was too tired to enjoy them.

Don't get me wrong. I think SA is a great band. But I think they and Pagan's Mind should have traded places. PM was definitely headline material.

They played all right, the band seems terribly depressed on stage the whole time though, and they didn't play far to long.

I actually liked VS's show. Granted, I was watching it from the far balcony and didn't see the intricacies, but it was amazing to hear David's voice live. As for the setlist, I wish they could have done a few of the older classics (Noble Savage, I Will Come for You), but given the limited time, they wisely decided to focus on their recent period of bombast (I mean that in a good way). Second best of the night, behind Sonata Artica.

BTW, I thought Pagan's mind gave a decent performance, but I hadn't known much of the band going into the show and couldn't remember much of their set after SA were done.

Sonata Arctica was my favorite of the weekend. Just a personal taste thing, though - every band I saw put on good performances.

I do have to agree with people who were diappointed that this was "another stop on their tour"...I do wish that they had played "Replica," but I still enjoyed the set.

This is really weirds since I love SA, but I thought they had one of the less memorable performances of the weekend. They sounded great, did what they do great, and I love their music. However, it was just another SA concert. At PP I kinda expect something a bit special, and I got the impression that to them it was just another stop on their tour (and from the comments above, it was). I was also a bit put off by the "rock star" attitude that Tony seemed to have. It seemed like he was afraid of a Beatles-type mob chasing him around. He seemed to be trying to disguise himself, and sneak around unnoticed. The guy has a right to his privacy, but the other guys in the band were acting normal enough.

Sonata really seemed to be mailing it in at Progpower, I was disappointed. My vote for the best of Friday goes to Raintime, despite the technical problems.

I'll bet you the crowd was bigger and more energetic here though! :)

Bigger? Yes, but energetic? If only you could've been there! I also saw Sonata at Jaxx two days prior to the PP show, and yes, they basically did the exact same set. Actually, that is one of the big advantages at Jaxx is the smaller crowd. Makes finding friends and hanging out with the bands easier instead of trying to find them in that crowd at PP.

Maybe I should teach Tony "Knick-Knack Paddy Wack" the next time to sing at future shows.

At Jaxx, Tony did not seem to display any of that "Rock-Star" attitude, at least not from what I can tell. Hell, I've must've spent the better part of an hour just shooting the shit with him and the rest of the band out there in the parking lot after the show. When he saw me at ProgPower, he recognized me and thought how cool it was that I was there (although I did tell him at Jaxx that I was going to Atlanta that morning after the show!).

But I also agree that Pagan's Mind stole the show Friday night (if not the entire event!)
