Sonata Arctica : Vote For Best Of Friday Night

I guess ProgPower is just a whole different world. Everyone seems to LOVE Pagan's Mind and all the other bands like them, while I was about to go crazy waiting for them to get off stage so I could see Sonata Arctica. Of course, SA is my favorite band, so I'm a bit biased, but all this progressive stuff...I just don't get it. It puts me to sleep. And I'm not saying they suck or anything (they do have talent), but I just don't get it at all.

Perhaps you should've looked around the room during one of Sonata's many wimpy ballads, you would've seen many folks catching a few winks during their set. o_O

With the exception of "Full Moon", they only seemed to kick it in during their encore which rescued their set IMHO. Also will echo that after seeing them in Chicago, I was expecting more out of them at PP and was disappointed. At least there wasn't any moshing at this show...

Hands down, Pagan's Mind owned Friday night, followed closely by Redemption. PM's live sound was right on and they nailed everything....Viggo is the shiznit on guitar, so tasty. Redemption just showed how much they've progressed....it really helped them to be on tour over the summer. I really liked Raintime's spirit and energy, but can't stand the growlie vocals....too bad they won't change that cuz I loved everything else about them. I wanted to like Communic more cuz I like their dark sound, but their stuff overall just didn't grab me live compared to the other bands. Virgin Steele....eh...can't really say anything else that hasn't been said. It's a shame that a US based band playing a US festival can't have members to cover the parts...unless that's what they are all the time...(?)

They were okay. Elisabeth and I were pissed that it took them 35-40 minutes to set up after Pagan's Mind left the stage. That's a long, LOOONNNGGG time to wait after being at the venue from 1:30 onward and feeling dead on one's feet. .
Try it from 9:00 am on, after working the Showcase, and having to be one of the ones dealing with the issues that were causing the delay during change-over. And not being allowed to be pissed.. ;) :kickass::err:

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the official schedule had a 45-minute interval (instead of 30) built in between Pagan's Mind and Sonata Arctica, didn't it?

Not 100% sure - I just try to get the backline changes done as fast as possible. ;)
I believe we added some time for Sonata due to them already being on tour and having specific needs, and for AF due to it being a kickoff of their tour, and they had backline gear arriving THAT DAY that need to be tested... they also needed time to set up thier board and in-ear monitor mixes.
We cleared a space in front of the monitor board to allow SA to bring their own monitor mixing desk in, which considerably jammed up side stage space.
The gear changeovers were done rather quickly... but tying any changes in to the studio requires some time to adjust levels. They also need to change tapes in the cameras, etc, etc
A few times we were done in less than 15-20 minutes, but had to wait for tapes to synch up or for band members to show up !

Sonata was somewhat of a disappointment. There was a lack of energy in their performance and they really didn't seem into it.

Sonata was a big disappointment. Not only they had less energy than say, the performance in NYC a few nights ago, but they also didn't seem very interested in being the headliner of the festival, as if they were there for just another little show. I may be wrong, but that's the impression I got. I love the band, and have seen them many many times. However, on friday night they were only better than Virgin Steele.

My favorites of friday, in order:

Pagan's Mind
Raintime/Redemption
Communic
Sonata Arctica
Virgin Steele

Dude !! I am so stealing what you just said (about Pagan's Mind) and making it my sig. I won't be a plagirist though. I will make it a quote and use your moniker.
I think Pagans Mind owned the whole event. I was absolutely blown away by them. It is no offense to the other bands. There were many that were really good, but I thought Pagans Mind was just on another level.

Thirding the comments on Virgin Steele. I like to give everyone a chance, but I booked after a song or two of theirs. That definitely wasn't a 6-string bass, it COULD have been a baritone guitar, I suppose, but I didn't think so. I understand issues sometimes prevent people from making it, or whatever, but flown-in bass and keyboards? Karaoke was Wednesday night.

That said, I was expecting big things from Raintime, and they totally whipped my ass. I wasn't all too familiar with Redemption but they put on one hell of a set, Pagan's Mind knocked me to the ground and kicked my corpse around the venue, and Sonata were brilliant. The last time I saw Sonata Tony was really struggling, but his voice sounded flawless last night.

Oh, and the "Old McDonald" was a classic moment in PPUSA history!

I was also a bit put off by the "rock star" attitude that Tony seemed to have. It seemed like he was afraid of a Beatles-type mob chasing him around. He seemed to be trying to disguise himself, and sneak around unnoticed. The guy has a right to his privacy, but the other guys in the band were acting normal enough.
Not at all typical for him in my experience. As I understand it, he'd been battling illness the last week or so and was merely trying to keep his voice show shape. Hence the neck scarf and avoiding multiple lengthy conversations. Give the guy a break. Vocalists have it tougher than other band members.

Friday night was a fun night for me. Although I passed on most of Raintime's set (can't stand the cookie monster vox) I enjoyed the rest of them - even Communic, which was a nice surprise! When Redemption came out, I was pretty well floored - they put on a great show and Sapphire TOTALLY made it for me! Then comes Pagan's Mind - true pros! They brought the house down, in spades, and had the entire crowd at their feet - what a show! Then Sonata Arctica....well, that was the icing on the cake. I loved that their set list was lots of new stuff and lots of old stuff (hell, I was half expecting to hear Dana that night!!) Full Moon ruled and the Old MacDonald thing was such a hoot!!! I really love Unia (and I feel like I am in the minority for that, for whatever reason) and I love the old stuff too - back when they only listed thier first names in the CDs and we were all wondering - who ARE these guys?

So...this is the list in order of 'how much I enjoyed the set':

#5 - Raintime
#4 - Communic
#3 - Redemption
#2 - Pagan's Mind

#1 - Sonata Arctica!

If I were to say the list was based on who gave a better, tighter, performance, I would have to switch it to:

#2 - Sonata Arctica
#1 - Pagan's Mind

Cheerios!

Pagan's Mind I thought rocked the house, then Sonata overall I had a blast. Wasn't happy with all the bands but that gave me time to check out the merch room.

I've never claimed to be a big Sonata Arctica fan. With that said, I know they're a big gun, so I wanted to give them a shot seeing them live. I thought the band sounded very good live, but I don't get much from their music. I think it's more or less a taste thing with me though and I do think I'm in the minority. They seem to have a good following here in the states and I wish them the best.

I can confirm that Tony has been ill for the past couple of weeks. I know Tony, and he is a super cool, very down to earth guy. If someone got an "I'm a rockstart vibe" off of him, I'm sure it is a perception thing, as that is not the reality of his personality.

i personally dont see how anyone could rank pagans mind out of the top 2 of that night (personally i think they put on the best show HANDS DOWN) the only band i think touched PM was freak kitchen, but really those are totally different bands too, idk tough call, freak kitchen i just had a shitload of fun, and pagans mind just floored me with their electricity on stage. of course those being on different days.

idk virgin steele wasnt that great for me, but i think to their big fans they probably were great. personally i thought celladors performance was the worst i have seen out of all the prog powers ive been to (this was my third). the guys can play fast, guitar playing was extremely sloppy by the main guitarist, and all their songs sound exactly the same to me! wish theyd slow it down a bit and write some more thoughtout pieces, they got huge potential. sorry if im the only one who thinks this but, that was the worst excuse for a bass solo ever, im not saying the guy is bad, but that solo was just... :( i hate even posting it, but i just had to say something eventually.

i think they made up for themselves a little bit in the all star jam, even though it was only 2 members.
