The Fates Warning one is coming to an end shortly so I thought I'd start this one up. I don't know if this album has been done in the past but it's in my top 3 of all time and a lot of other posters here seem to also love this album so let's do it. There are perhaps only 2 other albums I know in as much depth as this one.

I'd give pretty much every song on this a 10/10 so it's going to be tough, but my decision for this first round came quite easily to me.

Voted for No Mercy and I'm the Hateful Raven.

No Mercy pounds along without the subtlety of the rest of the album, but it does get much better at the 2:20 mark and then that killer riff at 3 minutes. It also features one of Corchado's wails which I actually love but I've never been big on the ending of the song.

I'm the Hateful Raven is better overall and it is possible I might change this vote (but probably not). It gets much better for me at the 2:40 mark. The acoustic guitar is a nice touch in this song, but executed better elsewhere on the album.

Make sure to post which songs you voted for, and if possible why you voted for them.

I don't know if I could think of a harder song survivor to do. The Chasm is super consistent and Deathcult is the most consistent of all their albums. I'm very familiar with this album but I don't have the faintest clue what to pick.

Next round will be harder for me (if people are interested and we get that far!). I have a clear favourite from this, it was the first The Chasm song I ever heard and I was obsessed with it for months before buying the album. It's the rounds before the final one I'll find toughest (if the song I'm talking about reaches the final).

I also have a favorite song from this album that I was obsessed with for a long time before really getting into the rest of the album much. I wonder if it's the same one?

I'm interested to know if it's the same one now. I'll let you know if it gets voted out/reaches the final.

'chanelling' (sic lol) is the clear first choice but what the fuck do i vote for after that? i know it's gonna probably end up being 'no mercy' but jesus christ that song is so damn good. deserves to be in the unholy company of peak morbid angel and slayer.

thanks for doing this anyways, i always forget just how incredible this thing is until i start wrestling with it all over again. most of the metal canon is nowhere near this level to my ears, no matter how blasphemous that is. it'd be cool if the people who aren't as massively into this album (or haven't heard it before - get on it yo) would still contribute to this, otherwise i'm not sure how many votes it'll get.

what do you guys think of the remaster btw?

What the fuck, why? Someone else voted for it as well. I love the intro riffs, picks up at 1:29 and then 2:13 is just amazing and they return to it again later in the song. Love that part with the slow drums and the way he kinda shouts " in every night of Soulless winnnnddddssss!". Last minute and a half, even though it's repeating passages from earlier in the song is just incredible. This is song is a masterwork and an emotional tour de force for me. It's not the favourite I was talking about though.

I can't edit it to make it public. I was going to but then I thought some people might not want everyone to see what they voted for? I'll make sure to do it for the next round anyway.

Also that remaster doesn't sound much different to the version I have on CD, but maybe that's a good thing? Everything just seemed slightly louder.

I was just wondering why you thought it was an easy first choice? I'm not sure I'd even vote for it the next round if it's still here but I don't know yet. Tracks 4 through 9 are the best on here I think.

I will come right out and say that I have't really listened to The Chasm at all  maybe I should lay down my vinyls and youtube this album for this? Is it fair to vote after one-two listens or is it too much of a grower album for that?

BTW I was thinking of doing The Spectre Within after ATG, should I wait 'till this is over or is two at the same time managable? :)

Yeah definitely look it up and give it a few spins if you can. It's my favourite death metal album along with The Red in the Sky is Ours. You can find it in full on YouTube or listen through the link Old Wainds posted. I think it is a grower that slowly reveals a lot of its secrets after repeated listens, but it would be nice to see someone's thoughts after only a few listen. I've left this one open for 4 days.

This should be in the 3rd round all being well when the Awaken the Guardian one finishes so should be fine to start The Spectre Within.

Vote for this round please. I think @no country for old wainds should do a call to arms like he did for the Fates Warning one and tag everyone he knows loves/likes this album to get more votes.

The Triumph of My Loss has always been my favorite, hope that one will win.

I've seen a few people mention this as their favourite track in the past, but it's not an opinion I can share. I consider 3 or 4 songs on here to be better than it. I just don't find this song to be quite as well structured or as emotionally engaging as the tracks I like best here, and it also doesn't have the epic qualities of those in my eyes. It's still amazing though and that part starting at 3 minutes is fucking glorious. It's on Deathcult so I'd rank it way above most other music.

I'd like to add that I totally love the vocal performance on this record. It's varied, passionate and extremely emotionally charged. I have seen people comment that they hate the "glam metal" wails that he does on occasion, but I think they're awesome. He runs the gamut of low pitched growls, high screams, wails and even shouted parts to emphasise certain lyrics or parts of the song.

Wow, didn't think anybody would vote for "Possessed by Past Tragedies" in the first round! Definitely in the top half of the album for me.

Come on guys! I've only got 5 sets of votes and this closes on Sunday. There will be no point carrying it on unless I get 10+ I don't think.
