We live in dire times. Everybody knows this. War looms, people still kill each other over landmass and in the west people bicker over pointless and senseless cultural hot takes. To me, music has always been the proper way to alleviate all the stress that comes from the anxiety of living in this world, especially so power metal. I know you guys probably feel the same. So I thought, why not have a thread where we post songs that lift our spirits, songs that put a smile on our faces, you know, stuff that proves mankind is capable of creation and not just destruction. It doesn't have to be power metal, it does not even have to be metal, but stuff that makes you feel ... hey, we're gonna pull through.

I'll start!

Saphira - El Timón

I recently discovered this Argentine band out of nowhere. Sometimes things just align like that. The song is from their debut album Bajo el cielo del sur, which was released this August. For those of you whose Spanish may be a little rusty, timón means "rudder". The theme of the songs seems to be the age old, but still charming, theme of taking control of your own life (much popularized by the almighty Stratovarius). Granted, the song structure is fairly simple, but when that chorus hits, it just clicks for me. The lyrics are the icing on the cake, not only because I've been trying to improve my Spanish for ages, but because in my current situation I am in sore need of these kinds of affirming messages.

Hoy el cambio empezará
El timón comandaré

Today, change begins
I will (take) command (of) the rudder

I'm not going to be long-winded here, just thought I'd set a good example with the first post. Can't wait to hear your recommendations!

Interesting idea and something different - I like it.

I'm going to open up with an Asia song, from the Omega album...I Believe. It's always been one of those songs for me that is just inspiring and hopeful

In this instance a live version of it from a few years back at Z7 in Switzerland which is a wonderful venue. PQ played there a couple of times down the years

Nice idea for a thread we certainly need all the positivity we can get these days and music certainly helps lift those spirits. Enjoyed Saphira, particularly the keys. And that is a belter of an underrated Asia track...that clip starting with Saint-Saëns's Symphony No. 3 is a hell of a way to open!

My pick is an obvious one:

This band has carried on that same sense of infectious melody, optimism and pure spirit-lifting energy that PQ brought. The lyrics in particular about recognising your own self-worth hit me like a tonne of bricks when I first heard it. For me this is one of those rare bands where everyone song is a hit, no misses.

That was a great song, and a top notch live rendition as well. Strangely enough, I have never heard Asia before, unless it's been unknowningly on the radio sometime (but that had to be a really long time ago). Very catchy, smooth and enjoyable. Very poppy, but who cares as long as it's good?

I can see these guys probably influenced you somewhat, Steve. ;)

I think you can replace probably with definitely there dude haha! Absolutely love the band - Astra and Omega are currently in the car - old cars still have CD players thankfully haha!

I'm sure you would probably recognise songs like "Heat of the Moment" and "Don't Cry" from back in the day on the radio.

"Heat of the Moment", probably. Looking it up now, it seems like it was a giant hit back in the day.

Speaking of influences, have you heard a band called Skyblazer? They're Swedish (from Stockholm, to be more precise), and I dare say they're heavily influenced by none other than ... Power Quest. I mean, have a listen to this song:

Hi dude, sorry for the late reply. Fellowship are great; a band that carries the PM torch proudly into the future. Their debut was a monster. The sophomore album is smoother and maybe more consistent. The song "Glyph" is great, but my favorites from the debut would be "Glory Days" and "The Saint Beyond the River".

Oh, and they seem like really nice chaps too.

Nw, nw - absolutely they really made one hell of a splash in pm circles with that debut. An instant modern classic. Glad to see folk making a priority of mental health they seem like a bunch of good eggs. It's hard to pick faves but those two are certainly highlights in an album chocka with highlights! I do think the follow-up isn't as good but it's still streets ahead of everything out this year for me.
