Songwriting vs. Playing Ability

I think song writing should come first... If you can make a riff very technical than go for it. As long as it doesnt take away from what the feel of the riff would have been without it.

Fast technical riffs with no musical feel to them tend to get boring much faster than a non technical riff that just sounds good im my opinion. Of course there is a place where I draw the line though, if the riff sounds good but the technality of it is very poor then I probably wouldn't like it at all.

I would rather listen to neither actually. one is too technical with no musical feeling and the other is not technical enough. But if i had to make a choise between them it would probably be yngwie.

@ you say punk has no good songs. but then you say it's all about songwriting, and playing ability isn't important.

so if playing ability isn't important at all, what music are you listening to? punk?? ;)

hahahaha nice one

alright then, fast riffs and technical solos do nothing for me if there isn't real music behind it.
example: I like one band called Malice Mizer, the majority of you haven't heard about it. MM's playing is not fast nor technical, but their compositions are soooo good, inspired by baroque, french music and also by terror movies and even games like Castlevania
the guitar players in MM are only average, but they have studied music relentlessly, and their singer, who didn't play any instrument on stage (only the piano, rarely) could have been a maestro if he wanted to.

so if I was to compare, Dream Theater pales in comparison to MM because of this. it's just a pain in the ass. :p

oh and punk is a pain in the ass and ain't technical as well... it's a disaster!!

how can people bad mouth dream theater?, they are fantastic musicians

john myung? wow, now there is a bassist.
i can't understand how people feel he is "boring"
just doesnt fit in my mind, suit yourself, dream theater is one of the only bands that give me, what i call, mind orgasms :)
