Hey dudes,

Just wanted to tell you that SPAM won't be tolerated anymore. If I see any nuisance threads, you'll be temporarily banned. We've found it to be the simplest solution to a widespread problem, so that's how it's going to be dealt with.

If you have nothing worthwhile to contribute to the forum, then simply don't contribute at all.

Just a big cheers to the majority of you for not succumbing to it.

Later.

maybe you can help specify in its ENTIRETY, what a "spam" thread is? Rather than being a bunch of ban/delete ninjas and never justifying why things go down here? I think it would be a good idea to elaborate on what exactly has sent up the red flags here. kthx, you may go back to soloing.

one day people will understand the importance of a united fan base. the most successful bands to ever exist...were the ones with the die hard fans. and to get die hard fans, you have to be real...and personable...and devoted to them, just as much as they are to you. a bad way of doing that is banning them for enjoying themselves together even in a harmless but goofy way. opeth loses no respect from the fans for this either, i see no downside. but if they give the fans nothing to talk about, youre going to have some restless natives. imhoimo

It's really as simple as 'Forum Spam is the posting of nonsense on a forum.'

Nonsense. Unrelated to anything, without any conceivable direction or point, vaguely related to Opeth through sarcasm, or via the author's deliberate intention to subvert the rules of the forum.

The threads and posts that fit under the SPAM category stick out like sore thumbs. I trust that people are more than aware when they contribute something worthwhile to the forum, as opposed to cluttering it with useless/provocative/wasteful jargon.

What's with your fixation on me soloing btw?

alright. well i guess thats fair. i do agree that if you give people an inch, they will take a mile. but i think this 100% pure florida Opeth only talk is really getting stagnant, AND is the reason for a lot of the backlash and "spam" going around right now. maybe if we can keep the subject matter loosely opeth related----to similar music related officially, then maybe a good compromise can be found here? Even mike told everyone to keep the progressive rock chatter going, and less posting of the polls, etc...so cmon moonie, what do you say?

edit: and as for my fixation on your soloing....i dont really know. but i do know theres more to life than shredding....go buy some drugs or something once in a while, good lord.

I completely agree. I don't delete wider music discussion, unless it's called for (flame war, thread has died down etc.).

I think the real issue people have is with the rules that Opeth.com has set in place.

I would really suggest... because Samsara and I have tried in the past, to get in touch with Opeth.com, with a list of people, or a petition of sorts, just asking for a bit more leverage when discussing music in general.

I think what people are iffy with is the inconsistency of the moderation on here, and for that I'm really sorry. We could really easily make it more consistant by deleting anything unrelated to Opeth... but that's no fun.

ill say this...

on the other opeth forum, we had a subchapter of non-opeth related music discussion. and despite the majority of the people there being these so called "trouble makers and spammers" here, it was a very fruitfull, informative and positive section where everyone gained something...at no cost to the forum itself. now i know we cant have a whole new section added here, but maybe if we designated a sticky of the "now playing" thread, and maybe "non-opeth metal" and also the "obscure prog" thread or something as well, people can continue to discuss everything within that realm without the forum itself suffering any inconsistancies or hardship. not to mention it would be self contained, so you guys could still moderate without having to play musical thread deletion every day. give people room to breathe...but give them some structure too.

Also moonlapse i rekon it would be a good idea to ban all that PWN R0LZ L337 5H1T

Thanks for the suggestion. I will have a talk with Mr Samsara about the best way to handle it. Personally, I'm not a fan of a forum's front page being cluttered by all manner of stickied threads. At the moment I feel like we have plenty. We'll see whether we can get the leverage to get wider discussion on the board itself.

There's been no targetting of the prog threads so far, though, has there? AFAIK, people are free to discuss prog, the justification being that Mike posts in them on ocassion.

Sometimes I almost feel that not everyone in the Opeth camp is on level grounds from what they want on the forum. I suppose we'll see if we can get that straightened out.

i think thats only fair. how are we supposed to know what is allowed, when the administration itself cant even completely agree on what is allowed, and what isnt?
