Speaking of *good* videos....

Rush, "Subdivisions"

It was early in my music-listening career and the song seemed like it was written about ME. I looked a bit like the kid in the video, was ostracized by my peers in school like he was in the video, and I'll admit I acted a lot like him, too. (Playing arcade games, etc.)

Shaye, good call on "Take On Me." I was thinking about that video the moment your message appeared. :)

You have no idea how much I totally disagree with you. Are you telling me that "You Shook Me All Night Long" strikes an emotional chord or a even a technical "wow" with you on a visual level that sets it apart from the majority of all other videos?

Glenn H.

uhmm, yeah, have you SEEN the boobs on the chick in the video.... and when she throws her leg over he head

Emotional Impact?!?!?!
"House of Pain" by Faster Pussycat...the story it tells is a tear jerker! and I am sure many can relate!

Dude, I have your back on this one! Very true about the video, story behind the song, and the song itself. I didn't think about that one, but you're right!

For me personally, videos have never made a big impact on me, so I don't have much input on this thread. I am finding the answers interesting though.

If this was about song lyrics, then I could go on all day long about it.

Glenn that was an awesome video! Thank you! It gave me goosebumps! I wonder if Billy Joel wrote anything like that about the war in Iraq. I'm going to have to brush on my Billy Joel.

I'm afraid that the "classic" era of Billie Joe is long gone. Like Elton John, he recorded some of the greatest songs ever back in the late 70s/early 80's before he went to shit (and hit it big) with Uptown Girl, etc. He has redeemed himself lately, but there are no Iraq songs in his catalog. Btw, if you want more goosebumps, go back to the video on You Tube. Click on the 4/16/06 bootleg video of the song on the right column which has current Marines performing the chorus and check out the reaction the crowd gives them. It's awesome.

As for brushing up on Billy Joel, there are dozens of amazing songs. I would suggest hitting I-tunes & checking out the following tunes to get a good impression of his bigger hits:

My Life
New York State of Mind
Goodnight Saigon
Movin' Out (Anthony's Song)
Allentown
Pressure
Only the Good Die Young
Just the Way You Are
Scenes from an Italian Restuarant
Piano Man

Glenn H.

Now that video will bring a tear to you eyes and give you a lump in your throat. That has to be one of the best i have seen. Thanks Glenn not just for the festival and all you do, but for being a patriot, and supporting our military past, present and future. I salute you.

They have a bunch of LPs of his here at a local used music store that I may check out then. I remember seeing Piano Man too. Billy Joel is something I thought we'd never discuss on this forum...kind of obscure! :)

You have to admit Glenn, if someone besides you brought this up, he/she would be in for message board ass kickin'! :zombie:

Let's face it. The majority of videos suck and will be forgotten a few weeks after you see it. However, there are few that stand the test of time because they provide such a visual impact to the emotions you already have for the song. For example, how many of you remember Metallica's "Until It Sleeps" compared to "Jeremy" by Pearl Jam.

Thus, let's see how this goes. Name one and only ONE video that you feel stands the test of time. If you have a link (such as youtube), please post it as well.

My vote goes to a video that still brings a tear to my eye as I relate to it through the stories of my uncle. It's from one of the greatest songwriters ever:

Watch Me. :(

Glenn H.
I remember the day that I heard that Cris Oliva had been killed on his way to "Livestock", I was totally numb. Now, whenever I listen to Jon sing a ballad, I think about that.

I'll have to check out that bootleg vid...sounds awesome!

I'll add a couple of "must have" Billy Joel songs to your already-excellent list:

Both from the "Songs From The Attic" live CD:
Miami 2017 (Seen The Lights Go Out On Broadway)
Captain Jack

The original "studio" versions are thin and poorly-produced (IMHO), but these live versions kick serious @ss. The whole CD's excellent, both those are two of my favorite Joel tracks.

Excellent choice!! For emotion, I'd also nominate Phil Collins' "Another Day In Paradise" (about homeless people, for any who didn't know). The video actually doesn't do the song justice, but it's still pretty moving.

For pure humor, though, I LOVE Puddle of Mudd's "Control"....

I crack up every time the smiley-face lands in the mud....the "puddle of mud," ironically enough. :p BTW, anyone else catch the drummer losing a stick in the video? I thought it was funny that they left that in, too.

I actually think all of the Phil Collins songs/videos off that album are pretty memorable.
