How do you cook spuds?

I want them tasty and soft, not roasted in foil with a funny shell.

There must be a way...

put water on, not too much
peel potatoes (or not, whatever you like, skin gets off more easy when they're boiled)
wait till water boils
put tatoes in
wait
test with fork for softness
don't let them be too soft
when ready pour water away
leave tiny bit in pot
put tatoes back in pot if they dropped out
put again on fire and shake till all water has damped

add butter and rosemary
mmmmhm

or are spuds something different?
