Ok, talkin SSL G Series.
Im having a friendly arguement with a buddy about guitar tones..

I feel that recording a live cab into an SSL onto 2" or SSL through Digi 002 is going to produce a noticably superior tone than recording guitar at home, through a Digitech GNX-4 onto a hardrive.

Ok obviously I know that the SSL has far superior pre's than an $800 digi board. The added arguement is not about cost in this case either, but accessibility vs. availibility. ( home being far more convenient, but have access to an SSL )

We also have the option to pass the home recorded tracks through the SSL onto our recording medium ( whether a 2" soak or direct through Digi002 ) at a later time.

My past experience with SSL vs Digital was comparing Mackie> Digi002 tracks to SSL> Digi002 and the SSL track was noticably warmer and fatter.

We are ALSO debating mix.. My feeling is that mixing through an SSL's gates and compressors can be very beneficial vs. mixing on a standard digital board using plugins or perhaps some mid price outboard gear.

Thoughts?

IMO the best of both worlds would be to record at home direct and reamp and mic the real amp in the studio through the SSL.
As far as mixing goes, obviously a well maintained SSL is going to sound nice, but cofort is an issue there too. If you are comfortable on SSL go for it. But, if your're way more comfortable mixing ITB then you'll probably have better luck there....of course it's hard to pass up an SSL...
