Ok..

Long story short, we are recording our Ep and we're doing it ourselves.

I have a rough mix already, and would gladly hear some feedback and especialy a lot of suggestions, i'm really struggeling with the low end. There is something in fender basses that makes them hard to use in drop B tuning

If anyone cares, the recording chain was:

Drums:

Triggers -> Alesis DM5 -> Quantized beyond stupidity
The cymbals are from Adictive drums, so is the snare + andy's snare mixed in
kick is form august burns red, toms are chimaira

Bass:

Fender P-Bass American Deluxe - > Sansamp RBI -> TL audio 5060
Fender P-Bass American Deluxe -> Sansamp RBI -> Ashdown MAG600 -> Ampeg 810 -> Audix i5

Vox:
Audix i5 -> Tl audio 5060

Guitars:

Ltd Ec-1000 -> Framus Cobra -> Vht Fat Bottom -> Sm57 + Audix i5 + rode nt-2 -> Tl audio 5060

Since no one else has commented, I'll have a go at it.

First off, not a bad job at all. But there's just a few things that stick out to me on first listen:

1) The drums sound like they're way over compressed. Ease off and let them breathe a little (unless that's the sound you were going for).
2) Plllease pan the vocals to the center, and not off center to the left.
3) Just a suggestion, but those mono guitar harmony parts...I'd pan them out just a little (like L15+R15 or so). The middle got a little too crowded and thick for me.
4) There's a few spots when the guitars stop that need to silenced faster.

There's some good raw tracks there. Keep at it! :kickass:

Sound nice. But i think drums are too ambient and muddy. And check the snare, too much low end. All is IMHO. Good luck)

Basically, i agree with everything grywolf said. middle is too clogged, move vox to center etc. do those things and it'll sound a lot better

what kind of room did you record the guitars in?

Sorry this is a little off topic. Did you record MIDI from the DM5? I can't for the life of me get it to work with my firepod and Sonar 6.

Edit: Sounds like you brought the guitars up a little too much to compensate for the distance problem. Honestly the guitars sound great, I'd just bring them down a little ways.

iamandy: yeah, when i hear them they're not that bad, when i turn on august burns red (or any tue madsen job for that case) i want to hang myself :erk:

we're called angelreich, we're from poland, heres the myspace:

Unavailable: yeah, for me it just works, i've conected the dm5 via midi cable to my alesis io|14, every time the drummer hits the midi led flashes on the alesis io. From the it was a question of selecting the alesis midi In in ableton live (i'm doing the project in cubase, but the drums in ableton live)

I'm thinking the snare needs more dryness. Right now there's too much room sound, pushing it back in the mix.

Kick is at a good level.

I agree with you about the cymbals, they sound a little distant and roomy.

Guitars could use a little more presence. Try boosting around the 1.5k-5k range to bring them out in the mix a little more.

Drums need to be drier, for definate. The August Burns Red stuff is really dry. Most modern metal records are really dry sounding. You're over-compressing them wayyy too much. The pumping is hurting my ears, it's quite unpleasant. AD's kicks are plenty consistent, so back off that compressor bro. When doing metal stuff with AD, keep the room mics REALLY low, like barely audible. They don't really contribute to the sound you're going for.

You got reverb on the vox and lead guitars aswell? Everything sounds like it's in a cavern. All your tones are thick enough as it is without the reverb, and that guys vocals are incredibly beefy.
Take some more low end off the lead guitars, and take off any reverb you have on them, because they're getting buried when the whole point of a lead is to stand above almost everything else.
Oh yeah, right at the end, I can hear the room reverb. Room reverb is the enemy of the modern metal album. Like I was saying, Drop B guitars are incredibly thick as it is and room reverb adds a shit load of mud to an already tricky to control frequency range.

The bass has a strange charm about it. Kind of reminds me of Converge - No Heroes, it's totally melding with the guitars, almost like one instrument. It's kinda cool. Maybe they could go down a bit, but it's a pretty cool sound as it is.

Good work so far, you're almost there.

Okey Dookiey !

I have finaly finished mixing my bands ep, added 'lectronic stuff here and there. Overall i think the mix came out unconventional but i'm pretty pleased with it..
