Buying a bass would be kinda cool and useful...but I'm still not good enough with guitar. Don't want to distract myself by playing bass right now,

Oh, come on!!!

If you program bass you end up using root notes anyway for the MOST part of a song. Doing this on a real bass is much more fun and fast than programming and more flexible.
You can always improve but if you can play a riff on a guitar you definitely play the root notes on a bass.

Go for the real bass!!!
